the return of the Russian nightmare

Artur Beterbiev will headline the first PBC card on ESPN of 2016
April 14, 2016

Light heavyweight contender Artur Beterbiev will headline the first Premier Boxing Champions card on ESPN of 2016 on June 4 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, promoter Yvon Michel told RingTV.com on Thursday. Rising junior middleweight Erickson Lubin (14-0, 10 KOs) is set for the televised co-feature.

Russia’s Beterbiev, a former Olympian, has not fought since June of last year because of a shoulder injury. He was supposed to participate in a world title elimination fight last November on Showtime before he was sidelined. Igor Mikhalkin was negotiating with Michel to face Beterviev. The winner would have been a mandatory challenger for light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev, whom Beterbiev beat in the amateurs.

Henry Rivalta, who manages Lubin with Garry Jonas, said that Lubin is excited to finally fight in Montreal. Lubin’s parents are Haitian and Jonas is from Montreal, so there are ties to the city, Rivalta said. “We’ve always wanted Erickson to fight in Canada,” Rivalta said in a phone interview. “The kid is really excited to open the first ESPN show of 2016. He’s looking to eventually be a main event on a network at some point and this is a good way to show what he can do.”

PBC on ESPN has had trouble getting off the ground in 2016. It was initially supposed to take place in January. Then it got pushed back to April 2. A couple more shows were supposed to occur on May 7 and May 20 before June 4 was finally settled on.

The opponents for both Beterbiev and Lubin have not been revealed yet.

GENNADY GOLOVKIN BRAIN TRUST PURPOSELY ADVISED HIM NOT TO FIGHT ANDRE WARD, SOURCE CLAIMS

GENNADY GOLOVKIN BRAIN TRUST PURPOSELY ADVISED HIM NOT TO FIGHT ANDRE WARD, SOURCE CLAIMS

According to a source with knowledge of the situation, a long-time friend and confidant of undefeated middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin recently revealed that his own promotional/management team purposely advised him not to pursue a potential showdown with undefeated former world champion Andre Ward. We're told that shortly before Golovkin's 2nd round knockout of mandatory challenger Dominic Wade, his childhood friend from Kazakhstan struck up a conversation with world-class trainer Virgil Hunter, who was also in attendance at the fights and happened to be seated right next to our source.

According to our source, after showing Hunter several pictures of himself and Golovkin throughout the years, the friend began to share with Hunter a discussion that he and Golovkin previously had regarding a potential showdown with undefeated former world champion Andre Ward. "I was angry with him; he would not fight Andre Ward. I begged him. I tell him he had to for respect. He said, 'No, the promoters don't want me.' I say, 'Don't hide behind promoters. You can get the fight. You have to fight Ward for respect.' He said, 'No, not right now.' I asked him, 'Are you afraid?' He repeated, 'No, the promoters don't want me.' He got so mad," the friend reportedly said to Hunter during their conversation.

FightHype.com reached out to Hunter to verify the account of our source. Although he did not get into any specific details, Hunter confirmed that he did indeed have a conversation with Golovkin's "good friend from childhood" about the reasons why a fight with Ward never came to fruition. "I like Golovkin, but I think some of the people around him are phony," Hunter added before getting off the phone. Calls to members of Team Golovkin have yet to be returned.

Open Letter to HBO, Team Golovkin
Vivek Wallace - April 25, 2016 - 3 comments

Gennady G. Golovkin has been arguably, one of the best stories fight fans have had the opportunity to watch evolve over the past three years. A male friendly bravado and a female friendly smile have only enabled the pure star that he is to shine brighter and brighter with each fight. His power, his vintage ‘stalk-til-they-can’t-walk’ aggression, his shot selection; nearly everything about him seems picture perfect. Well, almost. That being said, we have a slight problem.

In two weeks (May 6th), Golovkin will celebrate a full decade in the ring as a professional. Has it occurred to Team Golovkin, or Golvokin himself that during that span he has yet to face one P4P quality opponent to validate the hype surrounding him? To take it a step further, of the 3 straps around his waist, only one came from an actual victory over a standing Champion (Lemieux)? HBO has built a legacy on being the premiere network of the sport, showcasing more legendary talent than any other network in the business. Due to a fragile relationship with key promoters and certain talents in the sport, that reputation is at jeopardy. Sadly, so is the reputation of the fighter they now boast the most in this vastly changing era of the sport.

In September of 2012, trainer Abel Sanchez declared that Golovkin was “putting everyone from 154 to 168 on notice”. That same year and the year to follow, Abel Sanchez gave year ending interviews with major Boxing publications citing “next year is gonna be a big/huge year for Golvokin”. Mid way through 2016 we’re still waiting for that “big night”, and we’re begging to get it from an Olympic Silver Medalist, age 34, with 35 victories and 32 knockouts. Hard to believe when we hear the praise associated with his name. Are we waiting until you can say that he was “older and no longer the same talent” to soften the blow of defeat? I couldn’t co-sign that possibility when I realize you’re comparing him to a man who has performed at a high level through the age of 50 (Hopkins).

When asked why you’ve remained in the Middleweight division, Team Golovkin collectively responded in saying “we’d like to clean out the division”. When faced with criticism for being there, Team Golovkin collectively responded in saying “there’s no one to face in the division”. If there’s “no one to face in the division”, what exactly are you trying to “clean out”? Please respect the fact that fight fans on both the critical, and non-critical side of this argument love Golovkin as a talent the same. The issue for the critical contingent lies in the fact that we, as hardcore fans and media of the sport have witnessed the likes of other fighters with far less sparkle take greater risk while receiving far less acclaim.

Adrien Broner is no where near the talent of Gennady G. Golovkin; however, without prompt or pause, he took it upon himself to take the challenge of going up in weight to test himself. It didn’t work out, but he took the challenge. Prior to his career ending injury, Paul Williams went through 3 weight divisions without prompt or pause and took on Antonio Margarito, Erislandy Lara, Sergio Martinez, and Winky Wright during a 4 year span. He never received half the network/promotional push, or fan appreciation. You know why? Because he didn’t have what Golovkin has. Which is perennial power (in the ring), and the support of his network to back him up outside of it.

Every legendary fighter in the history of the sport has taken this next step to achieve greatness. Manny Pacquiao was the last legendary name to serve as the flagship talent of HBO. Small in stature, with HUGE shoes to fill. Golovkin now has the spotlight and the opportunity, not to mention the talent to take that mantle. Our open request is that you allow him to do so, without prompt or pause. Remove the training wheels and let go of the handle bar. He’s headed in the direction of greatness. Let us see, once and for all if he can reach that grand altitude. So far, we believe he can. But what we believe doesn’t parallel what he has achieved. As we say in the U.S. Marine Corp: Let him “lead…follow…or get the hell out of the way”! But the time has come to do one. Step up….or step off.

Respectfully Presented,

Like I said all along! They dont want none of Ward! Got Em!!
Did you know Golovkin offered Ward a fight in 2013 and Ward rejected it? Flat out said "get your name up". Confirmed by both sides. So Golovkin is doing his thing and Ward was doing his thing (fighting in the courts and not fighting in the ring). Fast forward a couple years , Golovkin literally just signed a deal to fight Lemieux when Ward's people, Roc Nation, contacted K2 and the deal they wanted to make was to sign a fight for a year away. K2 obviously wasn't interested since they thought they were going to get Cotto/Canelo winner after Lemieux, being that they were mandatory and all. So it literally made zero sense for Golovkin to sign a fight at 168 pounds, for a date unknown when they hadn't even figured out the Cotto/Canelo mandatory situation yet. Immediately after K2 said they weren't interested in that type of deal, Ward officially announced he's campaigning at 175 pounds, which is of course two weight classes above Golovkin.

I really don't know why people are still talking about this. Ward is at 175 now, Golovkin 160. Ward rejected a GGG fight when GGG wasn't mandatory to the WBC belt, and then later turned down Roc Nations very brief offer since they were trying to secure a middleweight unification/huge fight with Canelo.

Sorry man but we all know who rejected who whether you keep trying to defend him or not. The proof is there now so what else can you say.

On a side note I think Ward/Kovalev is a done deal!!!!!! Got Em!!
