Is it really Mayweather’s fault that the Pacquiao fight fell through?

By Chris Williams: I don’t think its Floyd Mayweather’s fault one bit that his mega fight with WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao fell apart during mediation yesterday. From what I’m hearing, all Pacquiao was willing to do was chop six days off the 30 window for blood testing, dropping it to 24 days instead of 30. I don’t know about you, but that doesn’t seem to make all that much of a difference. I can understand Mayweather’s reluctance.

I would have liked to have seen Pacquiao drop down to 15 days instead showing that he would meet Mayweather halfway on this. That seems fair to me, not 24 days. Also, Mayweather would still have had to make a public apology for the PED allegations. That, I think, he would never do in a million years, and I’m frankly surprised they were trying to get him to do. That’s like shaming him. Does anyone honestly think for a second that Mayweather would ever apologize in public for the allegations? I think by asking him to do that, it was the equivalent of shooting oneself in the foot.

Mayweather is too proud to be forced into making an apology like that. That part should have been excluded if they really wanted to make the fight happen.

I don’t see what the big deal with the random blood testing. It doesn’t take a lot of blood, and Mayweather was going to have the blood taken from him as well, so why not agree to the blood testing and let’s have the fight take place. I can understand Pacquiao being afraid of having his blood taken, but for that kind of money, one has to face our fears.

Nothing is easy. If it was, everyone would be a millionaire. You have to experience a certain amount of pain to make big bucks, and I think the blood testing was one a sacrifice that should have been made.

At the worse, I don’t see why the blood tests couldn’t stop 2 weeks before the fight. That sounds like a reasonable thing to do. But the part about the apology, that would be killer for the fight in my view, if Pacquiao and his management team were insisting on it. I think a lot of fighters would have problems with that. Who wants to be shamed in that manner? Mayweather isn’t the type to give in to that kind of thing, so it probably shouldn’t have even been considered in the first place if they wanted to make it easier to put the fight together.

FLOYD FINALLY SPEAKS

Mayweather: "I Wanted To Whip Pacquiao's PUNK ASS"

"Throughout this whole process I have remained patient, but at this point I am thoroughly disgusted that Pacquiao and his representatives are trying to blame me for the fight not happening when clearly the blame is on them.

"First and foremost, not only do I want to fight Manny Pacquiao, I want to whip his punk ass.

"Before the mediation, my team proposed a 14-day, no blood testing window leading up to the fight. But it was rejected. I am still proposing the 14-day window but he is still unwilling to agree to it, even though this is obviously a fair compromise on my part as I wanted the testing to be up until the fight and he wanted a 30-day cut-off. The truth is he just doesn't want to take the tests.

"In my opinion it is Manny Pacquiao and his team who are denying the people a chance to see the biggest fight ever. I know the people will see through their smokescreens and lies. I am ready to fight and sign the contract. Manny needs to stop making his excuses, step up and fight."

Fuck that. The only person he can blame is himself. If he would stick to the rules of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, there would be no problem and the fight would go down. Fuck him for trying to change the rules of the game.

Haha...he sounds mad. That's excellent news. I hope he does go in there and try to whip Manny's ass. Cause the moment he starts letting his hands go, and getting off of his normal gameplan...he's going to get his fucking bell rung!

What I don't get is that if him and his team were so concerned about fighter safety, and the lack of quality testing done by the NSAC, then why didn't they lobby with the NSAC instead of trying to make it a contract issue.

This, to me, tells me that the drug testing was nothing more than a ploy to gain a psychological advantage...and it backfired.

Irate Mayweather blaming Pacquiao

A day after their fight was declared dead, Floyd Mayweather Jr. said Thursday night that he still wants to fight Manny Pacquiao.

Their tentative March 13 megafight -- which many believe will be the most lucrative fight in boxing history if it happens -- was called off Wednesday night by Top Rank's Bob Arum, Pacquiao's promoter, after mediation failed to resolve their issues over drug testing protocol.

Arum blamed Mayweather for the fight falling apart, but Mayweather came out swinging on Thursday.

"Throughout this whole process I have remained patient but at this point I am thoroughly disgusted that Pacquiao and his representatives are trying to blame me for the fight not happening when clearly the blame is on them," Mayweather said in a statement.

"First and foremost, not only do I want to fight Manny Pacquiao, I want to whip his punk ass."

The final issue in the negotiation was drug testing.

They agreed to unlimited random urine testing, but Mayweather also insisted on random blood testing, even though the Nevada State Athletic Commission, which would oversee the bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, requires only urine testing.

Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 KOs) didn't want blood testing but later relented and agreed to three blood tests: one during the week of the kickoff news conference, which would have taken place next week, one random test to be conducted no later than 30 days before the fight and a final test in his dressing room after the fight. Mayweather (40-0, 25 KOs) would be subject to the same testing procedures.

When they could not come to an agreement, Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions, which represents Mayweather, turned to a mediator, retired judge Daniel Weinstein, who had successfully mediated a series of disputes between Top Rank and Golden Boy in 2007.

But after nine hours in mediation on Tuesday in Santa Monica, Calif., and further attempts to come to a resolution on Wednesday failed, the fight was pronounced dead by the Pacquiao camp.

The mediation was largely about coming up with a suitable time frame in which to cut off the testing before the fight. Pacquiao moved off his hard-line stance of no testing inside 30 days from the fight by agreeing to 24 days during mediation.

"We agreed to move the drug testing to 24 days under the supervision of the Nevada commission and Mayweather still wouldn't budge," Michael Koncz, Pacquiao's adviser, told ESPN.com from the Philippines on Wednesday night after the fight was declared dead.

The Pacquiao camp blamed Mayweather for his unwillingness to move off his desire for random testing until the fight.

Mayweather disputed that on Thursday.

"Before the mediation, my team proposed a 14-day, no blood testing window leading up to the fight. But it was rejected," Mayweather said. "I am still proposing the 14-day window but he is still unwilling to agree to it, even though this is obviously a fair compromise on my part as I wanted the testing to be up until the fight and he wanted a 30 day cutoff. The truth is he just doesn't want to take the tests.

"In my opinion it is Manny Pacquiao and his team who are denying the people a chance to see the biggest fight ever. I know the people will see through their smoke screens and lies. I am ready to fight and sign the contract. Manny needs to stop making his excuses, step up and fight."

The drug testing became a major issue when Floyd Mayweather Sr., the father of the fighter, made several public remarks accusing Pacquiao of using performance-enhancing drugs without a shred of proof. Mayweather Jr. later made similar remarks about him using PEDs, even though Pacquiao denies it and has never failed a drug test.

The accusations led Pacquiao to file a defamation lawsuit last week in Nevada U.S. District Court against Mayweather Jr., Mayweather Sr., Roger Mayweather, Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy officials Richard Schaefer and Oscar De La Hoya.

If the welterweight title bout is to be saved, and go forward on March 13, the camps likely have until Friday or Saturday to work things out and kick off the promotion as planned early next week in New York.

As Floyd Mayweather Sr. once said: "Joshua Clottey ain't nothin to fuck with!"

I agree. He is a live opponent, and he is a huge welterweight...rehydrates up to around 170 pounds.

I actually think this is an intriguing matchup. Much better than a Foreman fight.

jesus, clottey would be a very tough match for pacquiao. Gotta respect pac if he takes that fight over an "easy" win over a guy like Yuri Foreman or Paulie the Guido.

Pacquiao is fighting guys at 147 that Mayweather doesn't have the balls to step in the same ring with.

Mayweather's Adviser On The Attack: Fires at Bob Arum

By Mark Vester

Leonard Ellerbe, adviser to Floyd Mayweather Jr., fired some verbal shots at Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum, promoter of Manny Pacquiao. Ellerbe tells the Grand Rapids Press that Arum has tried to mislead the public during the entire negotiations period by leaving out information. Mayweather-Pacquiao fell apart on Wednesday after the two camps could not agree on the cut-off date for random blood tests. After a nine-hour mediation on Tuesday in California, Pacquiao's camp proposed a cut-off period of 24-days before the fight, while Mayweather's camp wanted a cut-off of 14 days.

Ellerbe says the offer of 14-days was made before Tuesday's mediation.

“Arum is trying to trick the public into thinking there was no compromise at all,” Ellerbe said. “He never mentioned that a 14-day compromise was offered -- and rejected -- prior to mediation. I think it’s more than a fair compromise, particularly since, realistically, it’s not an issue that should be compromised on at all.”

Arum had said Mayweather's business adviser Al Haymon and Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer had urged Mayweather to accept Pacquiao's proposal.

Ellerbe confirmed an earlier story that was posted on BoxingScene.com - by telling the paper that Haymon never made an attempt to convince Mayweather to accept Pacquiao's offer. He says Schaefer had also backed Mayweather's play.

“It’s a childish, amateurish attempt by Bob Arum to divide and conquer,” Ellerbe said. “It’s absolutely not true. It never happened. It’s a lie. I said last week that Manny Pacquiao has surrounded himself with smart people but I have to retract that statement. They’re not very smart people at all, because Manny Pacquiao is going to wake up, another deal is going to be presented to him, and he’s going to say, ‘What? I’m not going to make eight figures?’

“The bottom line is that what we’ve been proposing all along is random, Olympic-style drug testing. Why would the guy refuse random blood and urine testing? Why?”

There were a lot of dirty tactics being used during the negotiations for Mayweather-Pacquiao. Two weeks ago, a source [likely close to Mayweather] told the New York Daily News that Pacquiao's camp had asked for a penalty outline if Manny tested dirty for performance enhancing drugs. The source also claimed that Pacquiao's camp made a request for both sides to cover up any information if a test result came back positive. Tim Smith, a well-known veteran boxing writer, would not have printed the information unless it came from someone involved in the negotiations.

The information in that NY Daily News article was denied in furious fashion by Arum and Pacquiao's Team. The negotiations were never the same after that article came out. That particular article was included in Pacquiao's defamation suit against the Mayweathers and Golden Boy.

I dont understand your line of reasoning. The fight was pretty much set until Mayweather made a proposal (the irregular drug testing), at which point Pacquiao declined. Pacquiao did not refuse the typical testing which every fighter goes through. Pacquiao reacted to something - he never created any circumstance that caused the fight to be called off. I'm not saying either one of them bitched out, BUT if anyone did it was Mayweather.

If it were me and I felt the test would take away even the slightest touch from my game, I would tell Mayweather to go fuck himself.

^^In addition to that pacquiao was WILLING to do random blood tests, and random urine tests, and of course tested immediately after the fight. That is far beyond what is normally done for any boxing or mma fighter. Pacquiao DID compromise for floyd, but Floyd wanted it 100% his way or no way. To me, and apparenlty a lot of other people agree, that is a bitch move on floyd and I question his seriousness in fighting elite fighters that actually pose a threat.

I mean, lets just look at floyds history:

Antonio Margarito - floyd was offered $7 million dollars to fight him. Mayweather on camera agreed to fight him. Then, backs out and fights some bum for a lot less money.

Miguel Cotto - Not a big enough PPV attraction according to floyd. "who is miguel cotto?"

Shane Mosley - Floyds own words "he has 5 losses", "he's not a PPV attraction", "I will never fight mosley"

Manny Pacquiao - Not willing to do rediculous amounts of blood & urine tests that no other boxer or mma fighter in the history of either sport has ever taken.

At some point there comes a time when floyd is out of excuses. Either they aren't worthy as far as PPV sales go, or they are bums, or some other shit.

Fraud is just scared. He saw Pacquiaos interview after he fought Morales where Pacquiao says they took blood from him two days before the fight and Pacman felt weak and couldn't punch during the fight. He saw it and knew Pacquiao wouldn't go for blood testing before the fight so it he knew he had an out. Good job fraud-your master plan worked. Now time to try and get another hand picked fighter for another easy win so you can keep your perfect record. Meanwhile, Pacman will fight anybody they put in front of him and make no excuses.
