Bears name rookie Orton as starting QB
August 28, 2005

LAKE FOREST, ILLINOIS (TICKER) -- Kyle Orton watched fellow quarterbacks Alex Smith, Aaron Rodgers and Jason Campbell get selected in the first round of the 2005 draft while he had to wait for the fourth round to get picked. But only Orton won a starting job.

Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith named Orton as his starting quarterback on Sunday.

The announcement comes just two days after a horrific performance by Bears quarterback Chad Hutchinson opened the door for Orton to win the starting job. Orton also was helped when projected starter Rex Grossman suffered a broken left ankle in the Bears' second preseason game.

Hutchinson completed just 3-of-14 passes for 33 yards with two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown, in the Bears' 16-12 win over Buffalo on Friday.

Orton fared much better, completing 7-of-11 for 74 yards, including a two-yard touchdown to tight end Desmond Clark.

Overall in the preseason, Orton is 27-of-42 for 409 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions.

The 6-4, 223-pound Orton is a classic dropback passer with a big arm and comes from a pro-style offense under Joe Tiller at Purdue. He threw for 3,090 yards and 31 touchdowns with just five interceptions operating primarily out of the shotgun last season.

Smith, the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, will serve as a backup to Tim Rattay in San Francisco. Rodgers, the 24th overall pick by Green Bay, and Campbell, the 25th overall selection by Washington, are expected to start the 2005 season as third-string quarterbacks.
