Bay area rap photography question

I'm new to photography / graphic design. I'm wondering about the colorful, "larger than life" look that's been a part of bay area album covers starting around 2004. What are some of the basic techniques that people like Photo Doctor Graphics, Lady Tragik, etc.. use to get that effect?

everything else is tweaked in light room/photoshop. Like contrast/gamma/saturation etc. but a good photographer doesn't need Photoshop/Lightroom the photos pop right out of the camera.

True I dont need to edit my fotos as much now that I know what Im doing.but I still do it
