Can you draw at least? You can probably put something together using just Flash. Maya and 3DSM is overkill since no modeling is needed.

not sayin you have to but i suggest goin to school for it as well....im a fast learner and i taught myself photoshop and graphics but jus bein in school a couple months has drastically improved my knowledge in ps and i learned illustrator pretty quicc and gotten good wit it.....now im learnin flash animation and some of this shit gets real deep....

I have the 3d program, I got it for free, and I think I'm getting the handle of it, shit, 3d programs can be real hard to use and be complicated sometimes, but I like photoshop more tho

Use Adobe After Effects

Especially if your starting out. MAYA a $10,000 application

After Effects you can get for under a bill.
