If your talkin nationally....

- Ice Cube
- Too $hort
- Game
- E-40
- Snoop

Say what you want, but past and present if you look at overall recognition of West Coast Hip Hop has had the most influence by these people across the country....
fixed...mac dre was influential in the bay but not really on a national scale....had he not been killed at the height of his career things may have been different.

I'd go with that list for mainstream (with cypress hill honorable mention) but for lyrically:
Odd Future
Hiero
Crooked I
Ya Boy
Ras Kass
(with Tash from the Liks honorable mention)

There is a huge thread right below this one (Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All) that has all their stuff in it. They have been giving away their albums (not mixtapes) for free on the net for almost two years now and Tyler, the Creator's first actual physical release GOBLIN came out last week and came in #5 on the Billboard charts overall with a little over 50,000 sold. This is for someone who has very little airplay on the radio and without a cross over hit single or any features on the album outside of their own camp. Pretty impressive I have to say. His stuff is pretty dark and well, different for the most part but the crew varies a lot from member to member. I'm at work so can't really find links or the such but if you are bored go in the thread and ask someone to and I'm sure Oro, B-Buzz or someone can help you out.
goddamnit, nuttkase..lol. they over-enthusiasm of you & several others is the only reason i check that OFWGKTA thread. they have a loyal fanbase, i'll give them that.

i like some of their tracks. most are good enough to listen to, some are great.. but i have yet to hear anything thats amazing enough to explain the phenomenon they have become.. which confuses & intrigues me.

Yeah, I won't lie and say I don't hype them up because I really dig their music a lot for the most part. I'm like that with bands I listen to as well though. Odd Future is one of the first rap groups to really capture my attention in rap in damn near a decade. But anyways they do also easily have the biggest buzz/hype going industry wise from the west too right now, even if they really don't "claim the west" so to say. I mean 50,000+ first week sales for Tyler's album Goblin as an indie rap artist for your first physical release without big features or a radio hit is really impressive these days even if you were to hate their music someone would have to admit.

I didn't know you liked some of their music though, good shit breh.

As much as I like Crooked I's music and I agree the guy is awesome lyrically, people have been saying that for well over a decade now. I'm sorry but Crooked I is always going to be a "could have been."
because he hasn't hit the mainstream as hard as the others? or because he hasn't released as much music? (deathrow)

Both parts about equally. I mean I think Crooked I is really dope, but it's a pretty safe bet that the majority of rap fans outside of Cali or the general west coast don't know who he is. With Slaughterhouse that's probably starting to change though, which is great.

I heard of him years ago and been a fan since, those 50 week tracks he did was sick too.

You've been on these boards for years too (not saying that's where you first heard him, I don't know if it is) but I'm talking about the general hip hop consuming public. I'm willing to bet all the money in my bank account 90% of people who listen to hip hop don't frequent message boards and search the net for new artists they like, and that's probably a low shot % I just gave.

Like I said Crooked I is dope and I'ma fan, I hope he actually releases a retail album, I'd love for him to get the recognition he deserves, but do I honestly seem him getting much bigger than he has been in the last decade, or a lot more people finding out about him, not really.

I think I did hear of him from here, because I also remember hearing from soundclick or whatever it was called from here to.

but yeah I agree he does need a retail album.
