Richard Sherman's $5 million rant

Richard Sherman could stand to make about $5 million in endorsements -- all because of his 15-second rant moments after helping the Seattle Seahawks get to the Super Bowl.

Sherman, a defensive back, made the play that secured Seattle's 23-17 win over San Francisco on Jan. 19. Immediately after the play, he did a TV interview proclaiming that he was the best cornerback in the National Football League, and dissing the opposing player who he had foiled on the play.

Sherman's agent, Jamie Fritz, told CNNMoney that interest in his clients has boomed since the remarks. While Sherman's current endorsements amount to just a bit more than his $550,000 NFL salary, Fritz believes there are millions in deals that will be signed soon, -- some before the Super Bowl is played Feb. 2.

"We have some new players who have come to the table who are starting the conversation," Fritz said.

The remarks caused an immediate sensation -- positive and negative -- in social media and on sports talk radio, among fans accustomed to bland comments from winning players.

Some advertisers fret about the controversy generated by the rant. But Fritz thinks the rant was more positive than negative for Sherman's image.

"I think that he's more likeable," he said. "People love this. The brand managers love this."

Outside experts agree that advertisers are more likely to be attracted by Sherman's new celebrity than scared off by the controversy.

"He's going to be the very hot interview in next couple of weeks. I'm sure you're see someone take advantage of him," said Jordan Schlachter. executive vice president, sports for The Marketing Arm, a firm that arranges endorsement deals.

Bob Dorfman, editor of the Sports Marketers Scouting Report and executive creative director of Baker Street Advertising, said that the NFL's defensive players don't get the endorsements that offensive stars such as Denver quarterback Peyton Manning get. So the rant has elevated Sherman in advertisers' eyes.

"I think there are some who will worry because of the way he's not afraid of opening his mouth, eventually he'll say something that really gets him in trouble," said Dorfman. "But a lot of those advertisers don't use athletes anyway

Sherman, who was his high school's salutatorian graduated from Stanford and started a masters degree there his final year playing football there. Before Sunday's game he had few endorsements. His first two national ads aired during the game -- one for Beats by Dre headphones, the other a Nike (NKE, Fortune 500) spot that focused on Kobe Bryant in which Sherman makes a cameo appearance. He also has a regional ad campaign in the Pacific Northwest for Internet service provider CenturyLink (CTL, Fortune 500).

Fritz said even if he's not the star of the Super Bowl, he thinks advertisers' interest in his client is now secure.

"Win or lose, I don't think it changes the landscape of opportunities for Richard Sherman this offseason," he said. To top of page

I agree with what you said but he was actually fined for the "choking" thing he did towards Kaepernick if I'm not mistaken

Well that makes more sense because that's actually consistent as I remember when they "banned" Brett Favre's throat slashing gesture (such pussies the NFL is lol) and a handful of guys have been fined since doing it. Shit, I remember they fined Randy Moss for pretending to moon green bay fans

which ironically makes less sense since it's just a gesture and Crabtree pushed his facemask lol Goodell is making the league pretty lame with a lot of this stuff.

Colin Kaeprnick fires back at Richard Sherman

Y! SPORTS

Speaking to the New York Post's Bart Hubbuch, who tweeted Kapernick's comments out, Kaepernick was unhappy about it to say the least.

First there's this: "Did that make you feel better about yourself? Then go ahead. Because I’m not worried about you."

Then this: "His comments were ridiculous. If you have to tell people how good you are, then how good are you really?"

And here's another: "He's afraid of our receivers, and that's something I'm looking forward to [exploiting] next year."

And finally: "If I throw that ball one foot farther, it's a TD and now you're the goat, Richard Sherman."

But the problem is Kaepernick didn't throw that ball one foor farther. As a result, Sherman got his hand on the ball and Seattle won the game.

But moments like this make the NFL great. Seattle and San Francisco are emerging as one of the league's better rivalries and it could be something to keep an eye on for years to come.

Colin Kaepernick fires verbal bazookas at Richard Sherman

^A lil more in-depth:

For someone who got schooled by Richard Sherman in the NFC championship, Colin Kaepernick sure does have a lot to say about his NFC West rival. Bart Hubbuch of The New York Post had an exclusive talk with the San Francisco 49ers quarterback in which Kaepernick unloaded on Sherman, almost as if the QB forgot what happened 11 days ago in Seattle.

Colin Kaepernick on Sherman: "His comments were ridiculous. If you have to tell people how good you are, then how good are you really?"

This is a perfect critique of Sherman. It serves as both a backhanded insult of his skills and a tacit diss of his ego. If Kaepernick had just said this, he’d have come out looking great. It’d show he’s not cowed by an interception or loss and that he’s a confident player who’s going to come back strong next year. Unfortunately, Kaepernick continued, talking about the choke sign Sherman made in his direction after the game.

“Did that make you feel better about yourself? Then go ahead. Because I’m not worried about you.”

It’s cool that you’re not worried, Colin, but maybe you should be. The 49ers went 1-2 against Seattle this year. In the championship game, Kaepernick spent all game avoiding Sherman and then when he tried to beat the Seahawks corner to the end zone, Sherman made a great play to seal the game for his Seahawks. There’s a fine line between bravery and delusion. Kaepernick chooses to view that glass as half-full, however.

“If I throw that ball one foot farther, it’s a TD and now you’re the goat, Richard Sherman.”

And if my grandmother had wheels, she’d be a bicycle. What’s your point, Colin? It’s always game of inches. If teams were allowed to play the “if” game, they’d have to make a half-dozen Lombardi trophies every year. You made a bad play, Sherman made a great one. He won, you lost. Period. Any other interpretation of that play comes off like sour grapes.

“He’s afraid of our receivers, and that’s something I’m looking forward to [exploiting] next year.”

Here we go. Kaepernick says something that’s possibly true, can’t be fully rebutted and sets the stage for two epic games next season. For now, accept that Richard Sherman beat you.

If he throws it inches or a foot further, the ball sails out of bounds. Sherman had inside position and just completely took the route away.... he was on him the whole game, even got called for a holding which he probably doesn't even care about.

Not to mention you don't throw fade routes on 6'3 corners especially if the receiver you're throwing it to doesn't have the height or the hops to go up and get it.

When will this idiot learn?
