Roger believes Mosley can beat Pacquiao – Boxing News

By Chris Williams: Roger Mayweather, the trainer and uncle of unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr., believes that 39-year-old Shane Mosley (46-6-1, 39 KO’s) can beat World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 KOs) on May 7th at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Although Roger doesn’t come right out and say why he feels Mosley can win in an interview at ontheropesboxingradio.com, Roger still thinks Mosley can win.

Here’s some of what Roger had to say about the Pacquiao-Mosey fight: “I truly believe Mosley would stop Pacquiao, but under the circumstances under what they’re talking about, the fight is still going to be close. He [Mosley] ain’t going to lay down.” Roger seems to be hinting at something but coming out and saying why he feels Mosley will still be able to beat Pacquiao.

Like myself, Roger isn’t too enamored with Pacquiao’s catch weight handicap fights, saying “You know what, anytime I see Pacquiao fight somebody, he’s fighting them at a catch weight. He ain’t never fought no dudes who fought at their regular weight class. He fights them dudes at a catch weight. On, you can’t weight this. O, you can’t weight that. Antonio Margarito had been off I don’t know how long. Oh, you know, you can’t weigh more than 150. That’s what they say. He [Pacquiao] fights all them dudes at catch weights.”

I don’t like the catch weight handicap fights for Pacquiao either, but I do think he would have beaten the limited Margarito and Cotto even without them. Those two are part of Bob Arum’s Top Rank stable, and both of them have taken serious beatings in the past three years to the point where I think they were shadows of what they used to be at the time that Pacquiao fought them.

The catch weight handicap obviously didn’t help matters any for those guys, but, yeah, they would have lost anyway to Pacquiao and to a lot of other fights as well. It doesn’t take Pacquiao to beat Margarito and Cotto at this point in their careers. Throw them in with Alfredo Angulo, Sergio Martinez or Sergiy Dzinziruk, and you’ll watch Cotto and Margarito get chopped to pieces.

Roger says this about Floyd’s legal problems: “I think most of that is pretty much cleared up. The thing about it is yea, he has to get back in the ring. That’s how you make money and how you further your legacy. Hopefully, I don’t know, but hopefully my nephew and Pacquiao will fight. If Shane Mosley beats Pacquiao, then we aint eve got to worry about

206, is Victor Ortiz a good enough opponent for Berto? I think so....
I think no.. Berto won his title in a nothing fight and his defenses have left a lot to be desired. The Quintana fight is the only fight he should get any kind of credit for and the Hernandez fight maybe since Hernandez was his mandatory.

The sad part is Berto is probably gonna make more money for fighting Ortiz than Martinez is for fighting Dzinziruk .. that's depressing.

Alexander's Trainer: I'll Bring Nyquil, Theraflu For Bradley

By Rick Reeno

Kevin Cunningham, the manager and trainer for WBC junior welterweight champion Devon Alexander (21-0, 13KOs), advised BoxingScene.com that he plans to "bring some Nyquil and Theraflu" with him to Pontiac, Michigan, to ensure WBO champion Timothy Bradley (26-0, 11KOs) is feeling better as the unification approaches for January 29 at the Silverdome.

A few days ago, Bradley informed BoxingScene's Lem Satterfield that he was battling a flu bug for the last couple of days, but he also expects a full recovery by fight week.

"I've got this flu. I'm trying to get out of this flu bug. That's not good, but I'm still going to fight, though. No excuses. I ain't going to turn this fight down, even if I'm sick in the ring, I'm still going to fight. I'm resting. Lots of resting. But training camp is still going on strong. I'm still fighting and I feel I'm getting my strength back. I'm getting toward the final stages of this flu," Bradley said. "My nose is still stopped up and everything, but I'm still feeling good and feeling strong. My weight is good and I'm just ready to go."

According to Cunningham, Alexander himself was recently fighting a bad cold. Cunningham doesn't want to hear any excuses related to illness in the post-fight press conference

"I read that he's got a little cold. It's ironic, because Devon is just getting over a cold too. We don't make a big deal over stuff like that. We just took a little Nyquil and a little Theraflu and kept going. I can't tell you why Tim Bradley would go to the media and tell them that he's under the weather, but that's something we never would have did. But, you know he had his reasons for why [he did it], but I just hope that it's not laying the groundwork for an excuse," Cunningham told BoxingScene.com.

Berto-Ortiz Negotiations Hit a Wall Over The Catch-Weight

By Rick Reeno

BoxingScene.com was informed that the ongoing negotiations to make a fight between junior welterweight Victor Ortiz (28-2-2, 22 KOs), and WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (27-0, 21 KOs), have hit a wall over a catch-weight dispute. Ortiz's handlers have requested a catch-weight of 143-pounds. Berto wants the full welterweight limit of 147-pounds.

If the deal gets done, the fight will be part of an HBO televised, April 16, split-site double-header that will include WBA junior welterweight champion Amir Khan fighting from his native England in the main event.

Berto's promoter, Lou DiBella, believes the two sides are still very capable of reaching an agreement. He tells BoxingScene.com that he's confident the issue over weight will not become a deal-breaker.

"There is no reason for Ortiz to fight at a catch-weight. If you stand the two of them next to each other, Ortiz is bigger than Berto. Just look at their weights when they enter the ring...Ortiz outweighs Berto, so I see no reason for Ortiz to fight at a catch-weight. And with all due respect, Ortiz is not Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather Jr. Andre Berto is the champion and there is no reason that he has to go down in weight to fight Ortiz. Having said that, I'm confident Ortiz and his camp will not break up the fight over weight," DiBella told BoxingScene.com.

Some Quotes From Mayorga To Cotto

"I will KO you in 4 rounds, you're done"

"Your Fat ass friend will be happy when you lose"

"Save your mom the suffering and please retire already"

"Nobody likes you here in Puerto Rico, you don't have Tito's charisma. Tito can use you as his carpet"

"Do you remember Robert Belleza?(Robert Belleza is the drug lord who slapped Cotto at a club because Cotto was fucking around with his girl) The guy that slap you for fucking around with his girl?"

"I will fuck you up so everybody sees that I'm the man and you're the woman"

"Everybody in PR will wear black shirts for your wake after I Knock you the fuck out"

"I will be your worst nightmare, after I KO you, I will go to every club you go, so you be ashamed of yourself, you're done"

"I think that Puerto Rico doesn't want him. He will never have the charisma or the talent of Trinidad, who was a star. Cotto does not have the charisma to be a star. He is not liked. Your own people do not want you. When Trinidad came, more than a million Puerto Ricans went to meet him to take pictures. When Cotto is coming, he is only greeted by his manager and his family. He does not like it because he is not on the same level as that man and he never will be"

"After I knock him out on March 12, I intend to come to Puerto Rico to live here to be his nightmare. I'll get you on March 12. I'll knock you out. You're scared looking at my size. Listen to what I'm going to say, on the day of the weigh-in I'll be 153 pounds and on the day of the fight I'll be at 178. You will feel the impact of a man."

Steward: Cotto To Get Revenge on Margarito, Pacquiao

By Mark Vester

Trainer Emanuel Steward believes that WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto will stop Ricardo Mayorga on March 12 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and then move on to avenge his two defeats to Antonio Margarito and Manny Pacquiao. If Cotto beats Mayorga, a rematch with Margarito has already been scheduled for June. A rematch with Pacquiao is possible for the fall but far from a set option. Margarito stopped Cotto in eleven rounds in 2008, while Pacquiao knocked Cotto out in twelve rounds in 2009.

"I've always praised Miguel's boxing skills, which he seemed to neglect in recent years. But now that we've picked back up on those skills, his development has been phenomenal," said Steward told Puerto Rican paper Primera Hora.

"I have no doubt that the way Cotto fought [Yuri Foreman in June 2009], he will knock Mayorga out with a hook to the body. Then he should be able to repeat that feat by knocking out Margarito and then Manny Pacquiao, to avenge those two setbacks."

Mayorga really getting the better of Cotto in trash talking

By Dan Ambrose: Photo credit Tom Casino /Showtime: Former two division world champion Ricardo Mayorga is making WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto look really bad in their press conferences together with his trash talking and ability to literally talk circles around the socially uncomfortable looking Cotto.

In yesterdays’ press conference, Mayorga talked about Cotto having women’s hands among other things, while Cotto sat there stewing an turning different shades of colors. Mayorga is clearly at home on the stage which allows him to use his ability to talk and intimidate.

At Thursday’s press conference, Mayorga took things to a new level by shoving Cotto in the chest really hard, and saying “I respect your mother but I don’t want her to suffer anymore. I will finish you off and your mother will be in peace at last. This won’t take me long about four rounds on March 12th.

Cotto looks out of his element, like someone that’s giving a speech presentation for the first time. The thing is instead of getting better with subsequent speeches, Cotto remains the same, totally uncomfortable, press conference after press conference. Mayorga is almost like a professional actor/comedian the way he’s going about about ripping Cotto apart. He’s basically single-handedly promoting this fight all by his self.

After Cotto was shoved hard by Mayorga, Cotto looked afraid as Mayorga stood his ground waiting for Cotto to do something about it. It looked like Mayorga had really done a number on Cotto, and gotten him looking afraid. Mayorga may be up there in age at 37 compared to the 30-year-old Cotto, but he may win the battle before the first punch is even thrown on March 12th.

Marquez: Golden Boy Offered Me Berto, Khan, Morales

By Jhonny Gonzalez

WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez has cleared the air about a possible fight with Erik Morales on April 9 in Las Vegas. This past Thursday, Marquez met with his promoters, Golden Boy Promotions, but the money presented to face Morales was not what he expected. They also offered championships fights against WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto and WBA junior welterweight champ Amir Khan. Golden Boy will present Marquez with a new offer to face Morales on Tuesday.

"The offer they made to fight with Morales was not what I expected, but I'm not ruling out the fight. They said they were not sure how the fight would sell. I expect a new offer on Tuesday. I was offered a fight with Morales (51-6, 35 KO's), with [Amir] Khan (24-1, 17 KO) at 140 pounds and Berto (27-0, 21 KOs) at welterweight for the title of the World Boxing Council. I will talk with [manager/trainer] Nacho [Beristain] to see what is best," Marquez told Sal Rodriguez.

If Golden Boy offers Marquez the correct amount of money, he will accept the fight with Morales on Tuesday.

"I think I deserve a good purse, and we will continue to negotiate, and on Tuesday I hope to report my next fight," Marquez said.

Sky wants Haye and Froch-Johnson fights to be on the same card on May 21st

By William Mackay: WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (25-1, 23 KO’s) could be fighting on the same card and date as WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch, according to the latest boxing news. Haye, who could be facing his mandatory challenger Ruslan Chagaev (27-1-1, 17 KO’s) on May 21st, if the British Board of Controls okay Chagaev after checking his medical tests. Froch is facing Glen Johnson in the semifinals portion of the Super Six tourney.

According to the Daily Express, Sky Sports wants the Froch-Johnson and the Haye bouts to be on the same card, preferably in the UK at either the O2 Arena or Wembley. Johnson, 42, already said he’s agreeable to fighting in the UK if he gets paid well enough. However, Showtime may want the fight to take place in Canada or the United States so that it doesn’t have to show the fight on tape delay or during non-prime hours.

Haye, 30, needs to find out whether Chagaev will get the okay from the BBCofC. If not, Haye has got to go after one of the other top contenders, such as Alexander Povetkin or Denis Boytsov. It might have to be Povetkin, because Boytsov is said to have had surgery recently to repair a problem with his right hand. If his hand doesn’t heal in time to fight Haye on May 21st, Haye would then have to try and arrange a fight with

Tyson Fury vs. Francois Botha on 2/19 – Boxing News

By Sean McDaniel: Unbeaten heavyweight prospect Tyson Fury (13-0, 9 KO’s) will be facing 42-year-old Francois Botha (47-5-3, 28 KO’s) on February 19th in a 10 round bout at the Wembley Arena, in London, England. Fury is taking a big step up from the domestic level and journeyman fighters he’s been fighting since he turned pro two years ago in 2008. Botha recently fought Evander Holyfield last year in April and was able to hang tough with Holyfield until getting stopped in the 8th round.

What Botha has going against him in the Fury match-up is his advanced age and the spare tire that Botha is carrying around his waist. In his prime, Botha weighed around 225 lbs. However, now Botha is fighting at 250, and he looks to be at least 30 pounds overweight with his big pendulous belly. Botha isn’t likely to lose his big stomach by the time he faces Fury next month unless Botha goes on a drastic weight loss program before then. Given than Botha has been fighting at 250+ since making his comeback in 2007, it’s safe to say that Botha will just as fat as always when he takes on Fury next month in Wembley.

Fury, with his new trainer Emanuel Steward, he defeated journeyman Zack Page by an eight round decision in his last fight in December 2010. Fury looked good for the first four rounds when he was using his jab to fight on the outside. However, after the 4th, Fury resorted to his crude brawling style of fighting and ended up looking sloppy as always. He got the win but he didn’t impress.

Fury had this to say about his fight with Botha in an article at thesun.co.uk, “Botha’s experienced and tough. He has shared the ring with some truly world class fighters, but to be the best I must overcome all

Clottey-Green: Joshua back in action on 3/12

By Eric Thomas: For fans of former IBF welterweight champion Joshua Clottey (35-4, 20 KO’s), he’ll be back in action on March 12th against Calvin Green (21-5-1, 13 KO’s) on the undercard of the Miguel Cotto vs. Ricardo Mayorga fight at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Clottey, 33, has been in no rush to get back in the ring after making a bundle in losing by a lopsided 12 round decision against Manny Pacquiao last year in March 2010.

If Clottey was hoping that his absence would lead to bigger fights, he’s wrong because Green is the furthest thing from a huge fight. Clottey, ranked #5 by the WBO in the welterweight division, has decided to move up in weight and try his luck at junior middleweight. He has to now start facing bigger fighters and ones with better power than he’s been accustomed to facing in the past. The power of his opponents isn’t the real problem for Clottey.

His problem is facing fighters that can throw more than 20 punches per round, because that’s probably all it will take to beat Clottey nowadays. His work rate is horrible, and he seems unable to fight hard late into his fights. It’s been three years since Clottey last won a fight and that was against the smallish Zab Judah. Clottey hasn’t beaten a quality welterweight since 2006 when he defeated Richard Gutierrez. Since then, Clottey has picked up wins over Diego Corrales (a super featherweight), Felix Flores, Shamone Alvarez and Judah. This is why it seems unlikely that Clottey will do anything at junior middleweight unless an opportunity is basically handed to him by his promoter Bob Arum to fight one of his fighters like Miguel Cotto

Pascal-Dawson Rematch is Resting on HBO's Shoulders

By Lem Satterfield

Earlier this month, WBC president Jose Sulaiman has ordered an immediate rematch of the Showtime televised, Dec. 18, majority draw between light heavyweight (175 pounds) king Jean Pascal, of Canada, and former undisputed middleweight titlist Bernard Hopkins, of Philadelphia.

The decision, by an overwhelming vote of 30-to-2 by the WBC's 32-member Board of Governors, was made despite Pascal's contractual obligation with promoter Gary Shaw for a return bout against southpaw former WBC interim titlist Chad Dawson of New Haven, Conn., against whom Pascal won an HBO televised, disputed, 11th-round technical decision in August.

Against Pascal, Hopkins was looking to become the oldest fighter in the history of the sport to win a significant world title -- 38 days older than when 45-year-old George Foreman knocked out Michael Moorer in the 10th round on November 5, 1994, to become the eldest man to win a heavyweight crown.

It appeared that if Pascal (26-1-1, 16 knockouts) does not fight the 46-year-old Hopkins (51-5-2, 32 KOs), he would be stripped of his crown, and that if he does, he could face a lawsuit from the camp of Dawson (29-1, 27 KOs).

"The WBC has ordered the rematch between Jean Pascal and Bernard Hopkins by a vote of 30 votes to two. The WBC has a champion, and that champion is Pascal," Sulaiman told FanHouse on Jan. 6. "If the WBC, after reviewing everything, thinks that there should be a rematch, then there should be a rematch. And whomever does not accept it -- Pascal or Hopkins -- then he is out."

A deal for Pascal-Hopkins II must be completed, or else a purse bid will be ordered for Feb. 4 at the WBC's office in Mexico City.

"They have to accept the rematch, and the reason is this. We believe that the rematch would be another in the great fights that the world is expecting," said Sulaiman. "We believe that the first fight, even though it did not have too much support before the fight, it broke several Showtime ratings records that existed over the last four years. All of that makes this rematch very good for the sport of boxing."

Shaw, however, said that he would move forward with plans to make Pascal-Dawson II, this, in accordance with an agreement that he has with Pascal's promoter, Yvon Michel.

"My reaction is that we have a contract, and that the WBC can rule whatever they want. It doesn't over rule the contract that I have with Yvon Michel. Yvon Michel is a gentleman and I believe that he will honor our contract. I'm not going to go on record with anything other than that," said Shaw.

"Except that I will say that I trust Yvon Michel, and I believe that I have a solid contract for a rematch with Jean Pascal," said Shaw. "I have a long-standing relationship Yvon Michel. Yvon has always been a gentleman. He called me today ask me for the dates that they're willing to do the fight, and I have sent a letter off to HBO requesting those dates."

Michel is willing to do the rematch, but only if the fight is picked up by a major network. There is a clause in the contract that allows Pascal to bypass a Dawson rematch if neither of the two major networks, HBO or Showtime, are willing to purchase the fight.

"Nothing has changed since the last time we spoke together. We expressed our wish to the WBC to fight Bernard Hopkins. But we have a signed agreement for a rematch with Chad Dawson, and we will not deny that. But the trigger to it is whether or not HBO buys it. So, if HBO buys the fight between Jean Pascal and Chad Dawson, then we will have no choice. But if they pass, then we will be free to fight Bernard Hopkins," Michel said.

If HBO picks up the rematch, Michel will appeal the WBC's mandate for a rematch with Hopkins. Michel will not pursue an appeal before HBO renders a final decision on whether or not they plan to purchase the Dawson rematch.

"Before we have a move on that, I will wait to see what HBO is going to do. We will, if we fight Chad Dawson, definitely we are going to appeal the WBC's decision. But if we end up fighting Bernard Hopkins, then we will not. It's going to be something that we do not have to do since our wish is to fight Bernard Hopkins any how. So, before doing anything in that regard, then, we will wait to see what HBO is going to do," Michel said.

If Pascal moves forward with a Hopkins rematch, Shaw has vowed to bring forth a legal action. Michel is not worried about a legal case coming into play. Pursuant to their contracts terms, the rematch requires the involvement of a major television outlet. If HBO and Showtime take a pass, then Michel doesn't see any grounds for a legal action by Dawson.

"They can't -- not if we will really do exactly what our agreement is actually saying, but we can't do anything about it if nobody is willing to buy the fight. If HBO is not willing to buy the fight, and I don't think that Showtime will buy it either. So, if nobody is buying it, and it is not accepted, then, we will not do a fight together that nobody wants to see. There will be no grounds at all [for a lawsuit]," Michel said.

Don King Might Pursue Mayweather vs Alexander Next

By Lem Satterfield

This coming Saturday at the Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan, 23-year-old Devon Alexander (21-0, 13 knockouts) will stake his WBC junior welterweight title in a unification bout with 27-year-old Tim Bradley (26-0, 11 KOs), the WBO's champion. The winner could emerge as a challenger to eight-division titlist, Manny Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 KOs), holder of the WBO welterweight title.

If Alexander is victorious over Bradley, his promoter, Don King, said that he might also push for a shot at six-time titlist Floyd Mayweather (41-0, 25 KOs). King has been wooing Mayweather in an attempt to match him against Pacquiao, who is promoted by Top Rank CEO Bob Arum.

"I've been talking to Floyd just about every day if not two, three times a week. I spoke to Floyd a couple of days ago just before I went to Puerto Rico. So, he was going to a workout to see Devon work out in Las Vegas. I haven't called him since them, but he knows. That's another one for him," King said,

"That's another one for Devon Alexander. So we've got two doors to go into -- we've got Floyd Mayweather and we've got Manny Pacquiao. We would entertain a fight with King Kong after beating Tim Bradley if Devon Alexander does as I believe that he will do."

HBO passed on Cotto-Mayorga: Why isn’t Miguel facing better fighters?

By Jason Kim: Since taking beatings from both Antonio Margarito and Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto isn’t being put in with dangerous fighters all of a sudden, and you have to wonder if Cotto is ducking the better fighters in boxing to try and get a little more mileage out of his career. Cotto faced the feather-fisted WBA junior middleweight paper champion Yuri Foreman in his last fight in June of 2010. Foreman may be a decent fighter but he’s far from being in the class of Sergio Martinez, a fighter that has been trying to get a fight with Cotto for ages without any luck.

And now that Cotto has beaten Foreman, which doesn’t say much, Cotto is facing another weak opponent in the 37-old Ricardo Mayorga, who is well past his prime. It’s hard to argue that Mayorga is the best fighter that Cotto can have picked when Mayorga isn’t even ranked in the top 20 in the junior middleweight division. This is kind of sad how Cotto is now being steered against weaker fighters instead of ones that are more competitive.

After Cotto gets through with the Mayorga fight, his promoter Bob Arum will be putting him in with Antonio Margarito next instead of someone that is actually winning and looking good. Margarito has looked shot since his loss to Shane Mosley in 2009, and he didn’t look any better in his two fights since then against Roberto Garcia and Pacquiao. For fans that were once impressed with Cotto, it’s got to be sad how he’s deteriorated to the point where he’s being put in with paper champions like Foreman and washed up ones like Mayorga instead of relevant fighters. It’s like once great signing act deciding in the mid point of their careers to become a lounge singer in Las Vegas.

Holyfield-Williams end in no contest

Jim Dower: Photo credit Steven Lemenati – Former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield came up empty on Saturday night against journeyman Sherman Williams when their fight ended in a three round no contest after the 48-year-old Holyfield suffered a bad cut from a clash of heads that he, surprisingly, didn’t initiate. Holyfield was cut by the 38-year-old Williams in the 2nd round, and was badly hurt by a big right hand from Williams in the 3rd round. Had the fight gone into the 4th, Holyfield may have been knocked out because he looked hurt and gassed. Holyfield looked more than his age by the 3rd round. Holyfield didn’t look like he wanted to continue and face Williams in the 4th. It’s sad but Holyfield looked like couldn’t handle Williams’ power and precise punching

Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s Felony Hearing Moved To March 10

by Mark Vester

The evidence hearing for Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s felony domestic violence case in Las Vegas has been reset to March 10. Mayweather, 33-years-old, appeared in a Las Vegas court on Monday with attorney Karen Winckler, adviser Leonard Ellerbe and girlfriend Shantel Jackson.

Mayweather is accused of hitting and threatening the mother of his children and threatening to beat two of the children during an argument at her home in September. Outside court, Mayweather declined to comment about the case. Mayweather, who denies any wrongdoing, could face up to 34 years in state prison if he’s convicted of all charges
