I think signing Westbrook was a good move for the niners

he's not the player he once was, and he's injury prone... but if he's just used to compliment Gore and Dixon (who also looked good) he might be able to stay healthy

Westbrook? LOL at you guys thinking a back with that many miles suddenly makes you better. You are better off with another young and hungry kid like Dixon.
Westbrook is 100% healthy and still a threat...he can be switched back & forth with Dixon/Mike Rob ..while Gore gets all the light aimed at him...

you seem a little scared tho...I would too if I wasn't a 49er fan!

Westbrook's body at this point in his career is a glasshouse. I would gladly like to see him on the field when we play you guys. If you think 100% healthy means anything on a body with that much mileage, you are crazy! Wait until he starts getting hit.

LOL at thinking Westbrook is pumping fear in opposing d-coordinators or fans. There is a reason nobody except a desperate team like the 49ers picked him up.

A quick call to Matt Williamson of Scouts Inc. helped advance the discussion on Brian Westbrook's addition to the San Francisco 49ers. Matt was leaving Pittsburgh Steelers training camp when I reached him Monday afternoon, not long after the 49ers announced Westbrook's signing. His take:

"I'd rather have Westbrook than Glen Coffee. I didn't think Coffee was a very good player. Maybe he knew that. He was very much a straight-line banger. Coffee was not a good enough No. 2, and they probably knew that with the drafting of Anthony Dixon, and then the kid retired.

"Westbrook clearly is a big upgrade as a pass catcher, and you cannot overlook that in any way. They say they want to be a heavy run team, and that is all well and good, but whether you like it or not, Alex Smith is the most important guy on that team. He is a quarterback most comfortable working out of the spread, and you have to cater to him. Just because you draft two big offensive linemen doesn't mean you have to pound the ball over and over and over. You need to do three-wides and use spread principles, and Westbrook fits that very well. He is an excellent pass protector. He also compliments Gore very well.

"Gore is a workhorse, but he is also injured a lot. You need someone like Westbrook to give you two games at a time, and I think he can probably still do that. Watching him, he is still a good football player. It comes down to what your team doctors say. If they say he's a liability with a knee, ankle or head, you cannot sign him. But apparently a handful of team doctors do not think it's an issue. This is a very good signing. The 49ers are a contender. If I were him, I'd much rather go there than to St. Louis or Washington. It adds up on all fields."

There were times last season when the 49ers' offense didn't seem to fit Smith and Gore at the same time. Gore preferred running out of the I-formation. Smith was more comfortable when the 49ers favored spread-type principles. While it's important for Smith and Gore to coexist in that context, Westbrook's addition could make it easier for the 49ers to more fully embrace a wider-open offense when it suits them. And if Gore stays fresher and healthier as a result, he comes out ahead, too.

I don't give a rats ass what some expert says. Runningbacks shelf life is 5-7 years nowadays. They don't build them like Walter Payton anymore.Westbrook has atleast seven years under his belt I am sure.

Hate you say? I am simply stating an opinion. Face it, you guys have just as many question marks as the Raiders. RB's can't run without blocking. You guys better hope thos two rookie linemen catch on real quick. Singletary is playing them out of necessity at this point.

Michael Bush is a beast. It will be on display for you guys real soon!

So youre saying. Michael Bush Drafted in 2007, only has 2 years shelf life left?
I would say Bush has 5-6 quality years left. When I say 5-7 years, I am talking 200-300 carries a year. Bush broke his leg his last year of college, sat on injured reserve his rookie season, and was used sparringly when available the last two years. He still has very fresh legs.

how does he have A fresh leg when he broke it badly to where his draft stock plummeted greatly and had huge red flags that many teams wouldnt touch him?

hes a bruising back, their shelf life is supposed to be shorter as well....

raiders fans need to worry about their own running game. Hope DMC is dope this year. I really do.

Brian Westbrook is a dope signing, kinda like the Giants signing Aubrey Huff. Westbrook, (if healthy, and admittedly thats a big if) will absolutely fit into the Niners offense and be Gore's perfect backup. Throw in Dixon and I will take that 3 over a lot of other teams' top 3. the Niners have nothing but improvement to gain from a cheap but proven signing in a guy like Westbrook.

Return man Williams out for at least two weeks
The 49ers came back from Indianapolis with a few casualties, the most significant of which is rookie return man Kyle Williams, who sprained his big toe. Mike Singletary said Williams will be reevaluated in two weeks. Cornerback Will James, meanwhile, is out four to six weeks with a sprained ankle. Tight end Vernon Davis has a strained right knee and is day to day. Singletary, however, said Davis' knee "looked good, looked strong."

Williams looked good as a returner in Indianapolis and took a punt back 36 yards. I asked Singletary whether Williams' and James' injuries might mean LeRoy Vann will be re-signed. Vann both returns and plays cornerback. Singletary, however, said that while that was a possibility, "I think we're ok right now" as far as the roster. (Vann visited the Lions today, according to his agent). Ted Ginn is now the leading candidate at punt returner while Williams recovers. Reggie Smith, Brandon Jones, Dominique Zeigler and rookie Kevin Jurovich, who made a nice catch in Indianapolis, likely will be worked into the practice rotation. Bobby Guillory probably will not.

In addition, Singletary said that rookie linebacker NaVorro Bowman didn't play against the Colts because he was resting a sore shoulder. That injury should not keep Bowman out of action this week.

The injury news wasn't all bad. Outside linebacker Travis LaBoy (concussion/foot) will be back this week and OLB Ahmad Brooks will start riding an exercise bike, a positive step on his recovery from a lacerated kidney.

Other notes:

Singletary said he felt "very good" about starting quarterback Alex Smith, despite a lackluster performance in Indianapolis. He doesn't yet see the swagger from Smith that he'd like to see, but Singletary said there is a confidence that wasn't present last season.

Singletary wasn't ready to declare David Baas the starting center but did say that Baas took a "big step" toward that role with the way he played in Indianapolis.

He said he felt the offensive line did a "decent job." "The two rookies, I thought, did a good job the first time out," Singletary said. From my (Matt Barrows') vantage point, Mike Iupati was a lot better than right tackle Anthony Davis. However, Singletary's words indicate that both will continue to work with the first-team unit.

Singletary said he had no misgiving about dealing Kentwan Balmer to an NFC West rival. He said he had moved on from the Balmer situation. "When he wasn't here that morning (Wednesday), I was done," he said.
