Surrogate family converts him to Christianity, have him speaking English, and say they want to keep him in the U.S. (even though his family(including his mother and brother) still live in Iraq).

Brought to the US in May 2006 to try to save his eyesight and reconstruct his face after he was shot by Sunni insurgents a year earlier. Saving his sight wasn't possible, but doctors were able to repair Hamoody's sinuses, saving him from possible brain damage from severe sleep apnea.

"I'm sorry. I don't speak Arabic," Hamoody tells his family when they call. "I love you," they say in English, one of the very few phrases they know.

Hamoody now calls himself Hamoody Jauda Smith.
