The times, they are a-changin'. In an open letter to Xbox Live members, Microsoft's Marc Whitten has announced that the Xbox Live Code of Conduct has been altered to allow members to "more freely express their race, nationality, religion and sexual orientation in Gamertags and profiles." Looking over the updated code, it appears that the major change directly affects references to sexual orientation. Specifically, the terms "lesbian," "gay," "bi," "transgender" and "straight" are now allowed in both Gamertags and user profiles. According to Whitten, the change has been made as the result of customer feedback.

Early last year, something of a controversy erupted when an Xbox Live user was allegedly banned from Xbox Live for identifying herself as a lesbian in her Xbox Live profile. The report brought to light an ongoing conversation on the matter between the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and Microsoft. At the time, Microsoft claimed that it didn't allow users to express any form of sexual orientation -- including heterosexuality -- in an effort to prevent player harassment.

Obviously, Microsoft's stance on the matter has changed, though the company is still wary of possible harassment. Whitten states as much in his letter, noting that the new Code of Conduct also includes "increased stringency and enforcement to prevent misuse" of the newly allowed terms. Whitten concludes his letter by stating, "I truly believe that our diversity is what makes us strong: diversity in gaming and entertainment options, and diversity in the people that make up this amazing community."

whatever happened to the "dont ask, dont tell" policy ?

as a heterosexual male im finding out that america and society in general is trying to accommodate to these groups thus making homo behavior more and more accepted and almost cool.

i remember at one time i was banned from live on my xbox for "abusive name calling" calling him a fag, now apparently its ok

i agree. hella forcing acceptance. i don't have anything against gays but its kind of annoying to have shit thrown in my face. i don't need to know if someone is gay on xbox live.

I just don't understand the importance of stating something I could only know if I were in your bedroom, or performing some homosexual act. Ok you like people of the same sex, and I need to know this why?

Funny that these gays are getting all this special attention from Microsoft, yet when my black ass even says a word in a lobby I am instantly called a nigger by some unsuspecting nerd. Yet we never here about this shit...

it is crazy to see how much the word " nigger " gets thrown around while playing online, i was on PSN the other day playing some texas hold em with video/audio chat and no bull shit there was a dude in full KKK attire playing the same game his screen name was white_klan even. i suppose we could have told PSN about him but i think it would be funner to track him by IP and show up at his door.

as far as xbox goes i've already made the decision to stop supporting them, i have traded 30 games into game stop yesterday ( game stop has a thing going on now where you you get 50% more money back for your games so i took advantage ) needless to say i walked out with close to 400 for games i never played. i took 40 of that and had my xbox flashed to play burned games and bought a dual layer burner and dual layer discs. but damn it i can never go on live now.... well worth it

i can understand stating your orientation in your gamer profile.... but in your gamertag?

i better not hear about anyone complaining because of the amount of harassment they receive after changing their tag to GayGamer or whatever the fuck....

I flashed my xbox but I played live for more then a year after that. Till I got banned because (I think) I had an old version of the flash on my xbox. They had upgraded it because of a new security on the disc.
After I went online with the only orriginal game I have (COD:MW) I got banned.

But I miss online play now.. The best thing about the COD and many other games is the online play (Atleast, that is how I feel).
But I also stopped supporting microsoft so now I am thinking about getting a ps3 for the online games. And still play the single player games on my xbox.
After I get a job that is....

Doesn't seem like not such a good idea to me people will only be placed in cubes (quicker) I think.
I don't really see the pro's in this but only giving more reason for people to trash on eachother.
For the gay that got banned, I don't really see the need in expressing your sexuall prefences that way but it seems a little extream to ban him for this, though.
