Microsoft has confirmed that it will be increasing the price of Xbox Live Gold in Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom and the United States.

From November 1st 2010, the price of an annual Xbox Live Gold subscription will increase from $49.99 to $59.99 in the US. Monthly charges will also rise to $9.99, up from $7.99.

In the UK, it only appears to be the monthly cost that's set to increase, rising from £4.99 to £5.99 a month.

There's no word on a price increase for an annual Gold subscription in the UK.

"Since launching Xbox LIVE in 2002 we have continually added more content and entertainment experiences for our members, while keeping the price the same," said Microsoft's Major Nelson.

"We're confident that when the new pricing takes effect, an Xbox LIVE Gold membership will continue to offer the best value in the industry."

An annual Xbox Live Gold subscription in the UK currently costs £39.99.

A free Silver service will continue to be available.

That's fuckin' weak. All these features they keep adding, I don't use them. I wish they would have different tiers that include all this useless garbage.

Silver - Basic account with private chat, no online
Gold - Online and party chat
Platinum - Online, party chat, Facebook, Twitter, Last.FM, ESPN (incoming), etc

I really don't want to spend more because they keep adding features I don't use. Just give me online/party chat and I'm happy.

Oh well, I guess I'll try to load up on any deal I run across before the price increase hits.

Damn, I rarely even play my Xbox anymore, I use it primarily for Netflix. When I have played online it is only COD games.

Maybe I'll just hook my pc up to my tv, it's all in the living room anyway, then no worries about Netflix.

my ps3 still plays games online for free

the price for LIVE before didnt make me buy it an increase in price certainly wont make me get it ever....

i did like that last.fm feature though when i had the free trial

wasnt enough for me to go gold though

what if microsoft had so many features each user could custom fit to their own personal package and then be charged just for what they want because if its selected by the user more likely to use what they buy....seriously who twats on LIVE? EVERY OTHER DEVICE I OWN CAN GET ON FACEBOOK....does my xbox need to?

I don't know a single person who uses Twitter or Facebook on that service. And frankly, it's bullshit that you need a gold account to access those features anyhow, considering my laptop is a foot away and all that shit is free.

Not to mention that PS3 has everything for free.

And as far as Netflix goes, I already fucking pay for that. There should be NO reason that I have to pay xbox to watch shit on my tv. And what's worse is that when you do get gold, in the end all it does is increase the ads you see on the fucking dashboard. The dashboard is nothing but tabs of ads. ANd they canceled the one really cool thing that set Xbox apart from Playstation other than the fact that it costs anything in the first place... 1 vs 100. How the fuck do you cancel that game? There were tens of thousands of people on that game every night. That shit won online game of the year awards for fucks sake.

I dunno man I don't know what the fuck to do anymore. They're making it impossible to enjoy yourself playing a fucking game these days. If you can afford to even pay for Live these days, then chances are your Xbox red rings. I get nervous every time I play the damn thing because I don't know if it's going to turn on properly. It fuckin' sucks.

Industry analyst Michael Pachter has weighed in the Xbox Live subscription increase, and predicts Microsoft will offer a $100 Platinum service in the future.

Pachter – who correctly predicted the $10 price increase last year – said the new price point will allow Microsoft to reinvest these earnings back into the service in order to offer more enhancements down the line.

“The extra $10 translates to around $100 – 150 million per year in additional revenue for Microsoft,” he told Industry Gamers. “I think that they will reinvest at least this much in developing other new applications, and will roll out a premium service with $100 – 200 million worth of enhancements.

“If they can get 2 million users to switch from the $60 plan to the $100 plan, they’ll make an extra $80 million a year, and can keep investing to try to grow that business.”

Pachter believes these enhanced offers could include extras like IPTV or similar functionality down the line, virtual credits, or even iTunes management through Xbox 360.

“The Xbox 360 can work as a media center, and conceivably could do things like managing a music library,” he said. “Although Apple and Microsoft aren’t the best of friends, I could see Apple letting Xbox Live members manage their iTunes accounts through their 360s, and other such premium services.

“I’m not the guy to speculate as to what they will offer (for example, I didn’t even know ESPN 3 existed before it was announced for the 360), but I’m sure that there are many talented and creative people at Microsoft working on such a plan right now.

“For all I know, the Platinum plan might include virtual goods credits for various Microsoft games. If members could get specialized Halo armor or weapons worth the extra $40, they might be more willing to sign up, and it doesn’t really cost Microsoft anything to offer things like that.

“As far as other media center applications, I think we’ll see baby steps on IPTV before we see a full roll-out of a cable-like service. More channels like ESPN 3, perhaps they will offer HBO Go or something similar. There are a lot of emerging services like Hulu, Epix, perhaps a premium YouTube service.

“I think that the possibilities are limitless, although it’s a bit early to speculate on what precisely they will offer.”

The new Xbox Live pricing goes into effect on November 1, but if you are a current Gold member, you can lock in your current price with an additional discount for $39.99
