Who are some the more impressive lyricists when it comes to being clever w/ their vocab? I seem to pay a lot more attention to their verses. A couple that come to my mind are:

E-40
Savage C
Z-man
Mac Dre

There are going to be some obvious picks like 40 & MD that I mentioned but I'm really interested in what you all think. Maybe I might learn something.

I'd say 80% of the time I'm feeling a track for it's beat and lyrically timing but not always the content. I know spitting metaphors is not evryone's style but it's also not easy. And those that can combine it while getting a point or story across make me wanna listen.

If we talking Bay... my all time favorites were/Are Bad-N-Fluenz, Yuk, and most recently Keak. The reason I say Keak, is because over the years I learned to understand him more clearly so it's easier to hear the lyricism rather than just listening to what you "think" he said.

Define lyricistst for me please, because Mac Dre (RIP) was not a lyricist. E-40 isn't really a lyricist either. Both artists have some clever lines from time to time, but a lyrist is someone like Yuk, Nas, Rass Kass, Crooked I...etc. As far as the Bay goes, I can only name a few, not including the back-back emcees.

Locksmith
Yukmouth
San Quinn
Ya Boy

I honestly don't think Ya Boy is a very lyrical mc. I am a fan of his shit. I think he's nice. But i guess we don't all have the same definition of a lyricist. Ya Boy got a nice delivery but some of his lyrics are not that clever at all.
But Ya Boy is young so he could definitely grow into a lyricist. I wouldn't write him off so quick at the same time.
As im responding i just thought of Roscoes lyrical talent. Roscoe is a lyrical mc. If you listen to the song on Rookie of the Year with Ya Boy and Roscoe i think Roscoe's lyrics are on another level than Ya Boy.

^^^ So if 40 and Mac Dre are lyricists, what do you call artists such as Nas, Yuk, Rass Kass, Crooked-I, Jay-Z, Cormega, etc., ? Because 40 and Mac Dre are not in the same category.

"Clever with words" doesn't make you a lyricist. Punchlines, metaphores, multi-syllable rhyme-schemes, and subject matter; mix all these up, and you get a definition of a lyricist.

I'm just going off the first guys description, you can call those other guys whatever you want....

You gotta admiit 40 and md are clever with their words though

Then replace "lyricists" w/ "northern California rap artists"......would Yuk still be on your list?
