SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) A woman's dead body was found stuffed in a suitcase, floating in San Francisco Bay, and now authorities are searching for an apparent killer.
San Francisco police had said the victim, who was in the fetal position, appears to be in her 30s,and was white or a light-skinned Latina.
Then late Tuesday they said they had identified the victim, but have not released her name pending the notification of family members, reports CBS affiliate KPIX.
A young child saw the floating suitcase Tuesday morning near The Embarcadero and Folsom Street, and told a relative who alerted firefighters, according to a fire department spokeswoman.
Based on the body's lack of decomposition, Police Lt. Mike Stasko said that the suitcase, which bore no owner tags, may have only been in the water a couple of days. The victim's cause of death has not yet been determined.
Stasko said investigators were checking with the Coast Guard to determine recent tides and currents, in hopes of narrowing down where the suitcase could have been dumped in the water, reports The San Francisco Chronicle.
