DOWNEY, Calif. (CBS) ―
A distraught 86-year-old woman climbed down a 20-foot-high tree in the backyard of a house in Downey early Thursday morning after being perched atop it since Wednesday night.
Police were sent to the residence in the 7600 block of Calmcrest Drive near Horley Avenue on a welfare check about 11:45 p.m. Wednesday, Downey police Lt. S. Garza said.
They found the woman perched atop the tree in the home's backyard.
Two crisis negotiators arrived at the scene about an hour later and attempted to persuade the woman to come down according to reporters at the scene.
When one of the negotiators tried to climb up an aluminum ladder placed against the tree, the woman became upset and shouted at him.
After spending hours trying to persuade the woman to come down from the tree, officers and firefighters left the woman alone but remained close by, a Downey police lieutenant said.
When authorities went back to check on her around 3:45 a.m., the woman had already climbed down from the tree.
"It was a happy conclusion, but adult protective services will be following up later today to make sure she's O.K.," he said.
