I did a search already and didn't find anything here.

I bought this laptop through Gateway about 5 months ago, and didn't realized at the time of ordering that it was coming with Windows Media Center, and didn't know that damn near everything was incompatible with it.

I'm trying to run Cubase and/or Sonar for recording, using a M-Audio MobilePre. Neither of the three are suppose to be compatible with Media Center. Is there any possible way of getting around this? I spoke with Gateway and they said that there is no way to down-grade to XP Home or Professional. Is this true or can it be done (without the risk of fucking up the system)?

At worse the program simply wont fire up or will fire up and freeze/crash. At best the program will work.

And any company not willing to downgrade is a company you don't want to do business with. Most companies offer you the ability to change the OS for a small fee, but you can change the os anytime as long as you have the os you want to install (and have backed up your data.)

So, considering the fact that this is a "Media Center Notebook", I should still be able to down-grade to XP Home right now with no problems? Also, I have XP Home installation CD from an older Gateway computer (about 6 years old), would this OS work, and would i be safe to use if so?

All you have is a laptop with windows media as the OS. The laptop does not require windows media to function. Windows media is geared more towards people who need a computer for entertainment purposes (listening to music, watching dvd's and watching tv.) I just hooked my sisters pc up the other night and she had windows media center and it was already installed. I could have easily wiped it out, put xp or vista on and it would hav efunctioned properly.

Yes, windows home would be safe to use, but if I were you I would try to find windows xp and use that for the os.

back up the image of your hd and os. back up the data on cd/dvd or external drives. Install new os via a CLEAN install (meaning you install it on a wiped HD). Install needed programs ONE BY ONE. Update any drivers or files you may need. Install service pack 2 IF the programs require it to function (some do.)

You will have no problem going back to the original os installed. Backing up the the image of the drive should take 2 to 3 dvd's and should take about an hour to complete. After you do this you need to back up your data. The amount of dvd's or time it will take to back up your data will be based on how much data you actually need to back up.

I gotta go to bed now. One shot of cognac, some ice tea and my queen sized tempurpedic...:knockout: :knockout: :knockout: :knockout: :knockout:

Okay. I don't know if it the system or not, but when trying to run the Windows XP setup I got a message saying that there was no drive device detected.
I SPECIFICALLY gave you a link in case you ran into this problem. Either you MISSED it entirely or you simply don't like to read. :dead:

HERE IS THE LINK FROM TWO POSTS AGO:

@HERESY

I think the M-Audio MobilePre that I'm trying to run in defective. I downgraded to Windows XP Home, everything is running fine, but I'm still getting the same results with Cubase & the MobilePre; audio only being recorded on mono, only on the left speaker. But then again, everything plays fine out to the speakers (speakers connected to the Stereo Line Out).
