one of the biggest misconceptions in the music industry.....

you don't need a manager until it is absolutely impossible for you to manage all of your dealings yourself...unless you enjoy giving away 15% of your money when you don't need to..... It's funny when I see cats telling you to contact there manager when they got 4,000 myspace views...haha

but a publicist helps, but that cost BREAD, like 5-10K bread....cause the publicist needs that money to buy you that unsigned hype article, and that myspace music feature.

everything is pay to play nowadays

more you know how to do, the more money you make...

Yeah there is a lot of fake business shit out here. That's not what I'm talkin about. That's why aint nobody gettin anywhere. Most people who put out music, book shows, have tight marketing campaigns, etc and do that by themselves are not the best rappers. The best rappers like the jimi hendrix of hip hop type ninjas be on some other shit. They have threads to themselves, which is coo, but not gonna fly in the business world. You need a team. Everybody needs a position. Does that mean if someone calls you, you tell them to get at your manager when you aint doin that much? NO! At the end of the day someone is gonna get 15% if you make it where you want to be. Why not have someone who believes in you from the jump there? He has talent. The ninjas he's smokin wit need to get on somethin too. Take a photoshop/illustrater/indesign/final cut pro/flash/dreamweaver class. That shit is free. Take a music business class or read a book. The one who got chop go, make some cards and go to these networking meetings, the shows, the music stores, etc etc etc. Get wit the people who understand branding. Let him make the music and get on siccness and say weird shit, which is coo but the flyer in his sig will be hot.

i agree. one of my short comings was not having a team behind me. i got burned out doing a 9-5, promoting my own shows, putting up posters, do my show, then hop of the stage and sell some cd's. then gotta go to work in the morning. not to mention funding everything myself. gone are the days where every rapper got a crew that is just as hyped as the rapper, cause they all believe in the dream. with this new climate in the music industry, you have to be really creative and savy about your marketing. dude can spit though. my only critique is the sound quality could be better. one way to get a good buzz and market yourself to many people at once is doing shows. do as many shows as possible. people remember good performers. you want to create a core fan base, who will support you through the climate changes. know who your audience is. that doesn't mean that you limit yourself to one type, but artist go wrong when they try to be everything and please everyone. be true to who you are. be strategic. you want to get to as many people possible, at one time. last thing: perform, perform, perform! get some shows.
