I would try setting ur threshold at -10db and use a 4:1 maybe 5:1 ratio and see how that works. what kind of music and how loud YOU are will determine the output gain.

Thats easy to solve just bring every thing else down, you should be mixing around the vocals and not vice versa.

9:1 compression ratio is really high, especially when your recording. I keep my compression under 3:1 while recording and add some more during the mix. Try adding a Hi pass filter from 75-120 Hz to eliminate that "foggy" or low rumble sound your talking about. Also better converters will help. You got a pretty good setup man. Just keep at it try different things unitll you find the sound you like.

what other converters for protools other then Hd protools????
If I'm not mistaken the mbox 2 has a spif i/o which would allow you to use up to 4 channels (2 in, 2 out) of any converters out there that support that format, which is quite a few. You can go just a/d which I can reccomend you do at the least but if you wanna shell out a little extra cash I would just get a good two channel ad/da converter like the rosetta 200 which will give you top notch a/d conversion and d/a conversion as well. for something a little cheaper than the rosetta try Rme's Adi-2 which I have also heard great things about.
