Shooting Kills Boy In Ogden
Sunday, June 23, 2002

A 12-year-old boy was killed Saturday after being struck by a stray bullet fired during a nearby gun battle on an Ogden street, police said.

Jesse A. Martinez was at a picnic with his mother and a number of friends at Monroe Park around 3:30 p.m. when a gunfight erupted between three to four suspects on the 700 block of 29th Street, said Ogden police Lt. Scott Sangberg.

Martinez was struck in the head by a single bullet, and died after being transported to Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Sangberg said.

The bullet was a stray that had been fired in a apperant gang fight Two blocks away. The mother was unable to comment at the time.
