1992-1997--40 and Dreezy would be about equal during this period, because both of them were dropping their best CDs: 40 made FEDERAL, THE MAIL MAN, IN A MAJOR WAY, THE HALL OF GAME, and THE ELEMENT OF SURPRISE. Mac Dreezy, in turn, dropped YOUNG BLACK BROTHA, MR. STUPID DOO DOO DUMB, as well as several e.p.s (WHAT'S REALLY GOIN ON, etc.), classics all. Winner for this period= toss-up. Depends on your taste.
1998-2003--CHARLIE HUSTLE, L&B and G&G had cool moments, but you can tell that there's pressure on 40 to make more commercial shit than before. Mac Dre's more recent CDs aren't as lyrical as his old stuff, but at least MD sounds like he's doing what HE wants to do, as opposed to what the record company wants. And even when he's not at his best lyrically, MD is still one funny motherfucker! There's a kind of "drunk, smoked-out, after hours, just fucking around when the rest of the world's asleep" vibe to IT'S NOT WHAT YOU SAY, THIZELLE WASHINGTON, TURF BUCANEERS, etc., so MD's still fun to hear, IMHO. 40's more recent stuff seems a little too calculated to sell-sell-sell, IMHO (although I still think 40's affiliation with a major determines part of that). Winner for this period= Mac Dre.
Just my opinion, though...PEACE!
