I was speakin to some homies the other day about MC Hammer. We was speakin on his music, and it was brought up that when he first came out, he had a hard ass tape that fools was bumpin. (when he sported all Troop, not the Genie pants) There was a video for the song "lets get it Started" that was a very low budget one filmed in a club, but he (hammer) was poppin his collar in that video.....

Anyone know of anyone doing this earlier than that video, holla

Michael Jackson popped his collar in an old ass video. That shits been around since the 70's, I think E-40 was the one who brought it back recently though...

If you ask any old school bay head (including E40) where they think 'Poppin Yo Colla' came from, they will tell you that Rickey Henderson started it.

LOL@ "natural thang in dancing"... I aint never seen no ballet, jazz, ballroom dancers pop they collars, not even hip-hop until these days.

You think it is a form of that dance called the "prep"?

Can we get some examples of these "colla poppas" from the 50's?

Like Sneak said...Greasers, Rebels, etc. would all pop their collars up.

My Dad has an old picture from back then with his collar up.

He said they would have the collars down during school or at home (in the '50's you had to look proper)...and then when they left school or home, they would flip up the collar to look cool for the ladies.

It's the same thing, just done differently.

it was an old fillmoe thing back in the early 90's as part of the get low dance. but it could've started from m. jackson or rickey, i don't know? quinn and marv were the first to make the hit song about it. most slang terms like that came from either e-40, someone in the fillmoe or keek da sneak, believe it or not.

Poppin' yo collar has been around way before rap music ever existed. A while back I asked one of my guitar players, who is an older cat from Chicago, about this and he said they were doing it when he was a youngster.

Cats like to think they made up some slang or some shit like poppin' collars but the truth is, playas & hustlas been doin' their thing way before our time.
