Yup, that was a sad day...Everyone who was everyone in Hip-Hop busted rhymes live: KRS-One, Rakim, Eric Sermon, Redman, Craig Mack, Chubb Rock ("If I get into trouble, I will call Johnnie Cochran!" Everyone in the studio burst out laughing after Chubb said that line!!! LOL)! and a bunch of others...Ed and Dre interviewed some of the rappers and asked what "Yo! MTV Raps" meant to them...Salt 'N Pepa were there w/ their kids, but I don't remember if they participated in the freestyle session or not...

It didn't make any sense to me, either, why YO! got canceled. From '88 'til '93, it was on every weekday (w/ Ed and Dre) and there was a Saturday version w/ Fab Five Freddy. Then, around '93, it got reduced to two hours on Friday, after Midnight (my time). It was nuts, because Rap sales were HUGE during this period: The West and East were both doing awesomely, and the South was developing, too (i.e. Outkast, Goodie Mob, Bass Music, etc).

I never found out for sure what happened, and would be curious to know--I remember that this was around the time that MTV started de-emphasizing music shows and instead, focused on that teen soap-crapola (THE REAL WORLD, ROAD RULES, SINGLED OUT, etc). Beavis and Butthead weren't too far off when they said, "MTV doesn't show anymore music, huh huh huh. Now it's all just shows." So, that may have been part of it...

I also remember someone in a VIBE article (it MAY have been Ed Lover himself) saying that MTV doesn't want to be seen as a Rap-oriented network, because the powers-that-be and many of the sponsors were children of the '70s (and in some cases, like Kurt Loder, the '60s) and saw Rap as being "noise", because they'd grown up during a time when there was no Rap, and it was a case of these folks not wanting to accept that their precious classic Rock (or whatever) wasn't coming back. Wouldn't surprise me. Even in '93, there were magazines and critics acting like Rap was just a passing fad that would eventually die and fade out...LMFAO!

But someone else on this board might have some inside info on the demise of YO! MTV RAPS that I don't...in any case, MTV stinks like rotten pussy juice.

PEACE!
