I think producers can last longer (in the mainstream), just cause any fool can put out a record (in the mainstream). Producers GOTTA come out with hot shit....and in the industry, the beat is all that really matters, along with some catchy hook...and some elementary ass rhymes to go with it...look at young Joc.
I'll talk more about this once thers more responses

IT DEPENDz...

IF A RAPPER DOESNT TAKE THINGz 2 A DIFFERENT LEVEL, OR CHANGE CERTAIN ELEMENTz ABOUT HIM/HERSELF, THEY CAN PLAY THEMSELVEz OUT...

BY ELEMENTz I MEAN :

INCREASE OR DECREASE THEY VOCABULARY
FIND DIFFERENT CONCEPTz/TOPICz 2 RAP ABOUT
CHANGE DA PACE OF THEY FLO
CHANGE PRODUCTION
LOOK AT THEY PAST WORK AN GRO FRUM IT, OR TRY 2 TOP IT

I LIKE HOW MAC DRE (R.I.P) ExPAND'D HIZ CREATIVITY AN RE-CREATED HIMSELF WIT ERY PROJECT...

2 ME IT WAZ GENIUS...

A PRODUCER CAN GET PLAY'D OUT BY USE'N DA SAME TEMPO, SAME SOUNDz, SAME PRODUCTION EQUIPMENT...

MANY PRODUCERz LIKE 2 USE DIFFERENT EQUIPMENT, AN SUMTIMEz IT CAN B 4 BETTER OR WORSE...

DEPENDz...

BOTH CAN EQUALLY B PLAY'D OUT...

A rapper will only last for a while compared to a producer...ex. the rapper wouldnt be shit with out some heat from a producer..and the producer wouldnt be shit with out the rapper...but over time more clients roll to the producer. He never ages behind a sound. But the rapper will have to call it quits when he cant keep his image up. Nobody at a young age wants to hear a song from a 40-50 yr old. But any body will jump on a Dre beat(Dont know his age) but he has to be getting up there.
