i plan on gettin Cubase SX 1.x for OSX... does that program support them?

yup. The vst standard was developed by Steinberg (who make Cubase).

what's the difference between Cubase SX and Cubase SL?

number of tracks and fx busses im pretty sure

track count is based on your computer. FX busses (sends/ inserts/master fx block) 5.1 capabilities, dithering (it uses a different dither) vst instrument inserts and a couple of other things are different.

Unless you NEED 8 sends per channel, surround sound etc etc etc I see no reason in purchasing SX. I don't believe sl has 32 bit float options either.
