mixing is putting all the elements of the song(vocals, snare, kick, bass, lead, guitar) into seperate tracks.....and using panning and volume to each track correctly so that no element drowns out the other.....

mastering is another story......ever notice how comercially released cds sound more polished than the cd that youre homie did in his basement?....mastering gives recordings a more polished, ready for radio sound.....

hope that helped.....i was trying to keep it shot and to the point

Basically.....

Mixing is taking all the elements of a recorded work and combining them together into a final version. Things like EQ'ing, adding effects, adjusting the volumes of different sounds, etc is done during this step.

Mastering is an optional step after mixing that is used to even out the levels across the album as a whole. You can pop the cd in, set your EQ and volume how you like and then let the cd play all the way thru without having to make any adjustments. Mastering is also used to smooth the quality across different platforms.... For example, make it sound good in both a car and home stereo instead of really good in a car and like shit on a home stereo. Mastering can attempt to correct errors made during mixing.

I wrote a more in-depth post about this a long long time ago. You might be able to find it with the search option, if you want to know about about this stuff. Or you could search the web for that matter. There's a ton of bad or flat out wrong information on the web though so try to make sure that whatever you're reading is coming from a credible source.
