I've been working on computers for some time now and still run Windows 98 SE on on my workstation (home PC). The reason being is it's simplicity and versatility, and ease of use. But now-a-days this tired ass operating system has been raped and exploited beyong belief. Not only that, but now there is software being released that won't even work on 98'. It's like a feeding ground for spyware, etc.

My girlfriend's mom runs Window XP but the shit has so much graphics it's disgusting, takes like 5 seconds to open a damn folder. Although, I've heard you can install the same OS without the graphics.

So what does everyone reccomend, I'm thinking some release of Windows XP or Windows 2000, but which make? I like speed, obviously, but I don't like shit cluttered.

Keep in mind that I run a 900mhz Celeron with 248mb RAM, so I don't want to overload.

Suggestions are appreciated.. What do you guys run and how has it worked out for you? How often do you stumble across software (game or app) that doesn't work with your OS?

Thanks!

XP on a fast machine works like 98... with better stability and way more features. Only problem is it can be very vulnerable so you've got to put lots of security on it before even touching the net. My brother reformatted and installed it the other day, and within five minutes of browsing, he already had the Blaster Worm. You can choose a standard Windows Theme in display properties that will make it look like Windows 2000. XP is just as stable as 2000, but with better features, and quicker startup times. And as far as incompatable software, I've never had any problems. You can right click an executable and get into properties, and you can choose a different OS's compatability mode.

Xp needs a lot of RAM as a minimum requirement. Windows 2000 needs less and basically has all the same shit in it as XP. Its also very stable.

Damn, spyware is one thing I am trying to avoid. I got hit hard on 98. Shit got to my I.E. and caused it to crash every time I boot up making it impossible to do anything on the computer. I had to reinstall another windows over it (so it saved all my files) just to go on the net. If it don't get that bad, then I see it as a security upgrade.

I'm downloading two versions.

Microsoft Windows XP Professional Corporate incl SP2

Microsoft Windows XP SP2 With Advanced Security Technologies

I'm guessing the advanced securities wouldnt be a bad choice.

Get Linux, it's free it's fast and little or no viruses plus free software....
I love running *nix as a workstation, but I live with two girls who would have trouble adjusting to the change. I used to run FreeBSD and I loved it.

i just installed SuSE linux. it's actually really user friendly. as long as they're not trying to install and configure programs, they should have no problem with it. so far, i havn't had trouble with anything other than video files because i didn't have the right codecs. i mounted my c: to /windows/C and installed wine (windows emulator). now i can run any windows app and codecs and don't have any problems at all.

just a thought. that might be a way for you to get the versatility of linux and them to get the ease of windows.
