There could be several things but the most important to me are:

1) Knockin Beats (More on that Mobb tip...fast shit can get annoying if I'm not in the mood)

2) Good Keyboards (I know some people are saying this is a 90's type formula...but shit still compliments a good beat the best)

3) Tight Spits In Rhythm (Content is important but bringing it on time makes a huge difference in the feel of the flow)

And then ofcourse bringing it all together w/ a melody to make it music...the more consistant the better.

All the above get me loving a track...but this is just my liking. So basically the tracks you lay down speak for the album. I'm curious what other kats have to say on this.

In addition to that, the consistency throughout the CD has to be top notch, Khayree was good at that and Dre is the best, look at the Blackalation or both Chronics, all hooks, beats & concepts are complex & catchy...Nothin lame...The rymes are on point & flow with a good beat,(Something like Too $hort, he dont have the best lyrics, but he can ride a beat smoother & better than anyone) basically something you want to listen to over & over until its memorized & liked by the listener.

exactly....it's funny how many "artists" out there worry more about they appearance, album covers, features etc etc......instead of actually working on quality music...not quantity....just remmember ANYONE CAN RAP.....but it's the one's with a passion for music that make it...

1. good production: i like a good producer that laces tha album with different vibes. maybe a chill tracc, a ride tracc, a club tracc. also a producer that changes his beat up. adds a cymbal here, drops it here, adds shum else here, drops tha snares, piccs it up. that's wut, i feel, tha east coast laccs. they jus throw traccs on a sequence and loops it over and over again.

2. good lyricist/ rapper: i like an artist that has passion, good delivery, good voice, good vocabulary, doesnt rap tha same thru tha whole song wit tha same rhyme scheme, tha same delivery and voice. he's GOTTA hav a complex rhyme pattern.

3. no fillers: fucc fillers!!!!!!!!! i think on EVERY tracc, tha artist should treat it like that CLASSIC tracc. put time in2 every tracc.

fold.

what makes an album tight to me? hmmm. well, L-wood covered most of it, but i'd add that if i can feel or relate to what the artist is speakin on, it makes the album that much better to me. im not really into party-rap like alot of yall seem to be (fast beats, every song is about bein a "playa" and "poppin collas") im more into mobb shit.

A musician should have beats/band that matches his style/lyrics.
Good example: Guce's If It Ain't Real It Ain't Official

Just having a sick beat doesn't mean it sounds right with the style/lyrics.

Also, a sick album has a specific theme THROUGHOUT the album. Don't just name an album Mob Shit and rap about Love.... (Ja Rule?). Good albums usually tie in to a certain theme, unless the songs are PURE SLUMPS like Michael Jackson's Thriller.

what makes an album tight to me?

well a tight album to me is a rapper actually taking time to work on the production or each and every song. taking time to work on beats to where anyone can bob their head to the beat. taking time to come up with some good lyrics and making it flow good with the rhythm of the beat and drum machine. having some good hooks that make sence. being real on the whole record instead of just rapping about money or cars or some other shit like that. take that, "Eazy E - Its On" album. that album is tight. the beats are good, the lyrics go well with the beats. the production is real good. the album is a classic and its only a 8 song album. if you got the time and money for studio time and a creative mind & imagination, you can make a good song. you just got to be able to put all of your time into the game if its a tight album that you want and not just make it one of your prioritys. i think if you want a good album that everyone will like, you got to have mad passion for it and nothing else. see i want to be a rapper, but i've been planning on becoming a Graphic Designer for a long time and i've already started college to become one, so i probally wont be able to become a rapper. i still try to write some lyrics, though. but just remember that everyone has different tastes in music. not everyone likes the same thing. so just do whats best for you and see if your crowd likes it and if they do, than continue making your music that way.

An artist who has a distinctive sound (like no other)...a original type of lyrical delivery..that also is fluid and also can be versatile....beats bumpin...shit to nod your head too...not shake yo ass too...deep bass...slumpn shit....beats that are original and don't sound like was made up in a hour or something...keep it fresh..always have the listener wondering what you coming with next...I truly hate records that have the same type fucken beats on every song on a album...voices that say nothing new or not bring any originality are boring....flows that are off or annoying voices (you know some people aren't fit to rap).....make the cd with music you yourself would bump in yo ride ...if the shit don't knock and you hate it...go back to the lab and come with some shit you can be proud of...go with your gut....don't always listen to what your frenz say...some of them could only be trying to boost your ego....after you got a finished product of selection of songs...have peole listen to it and get feedback and the vibe from them.....have different types of people listen to it to get a spectrum of different things and outlooks on your material....sounds corny but when I hear a bangin cd...I know it is...because i get goosebumps on my arms....when a cd gets me like that...I know the shit is tight and that its something special to me....rarely does it happen but it has in the past...

As far as the artist: LYRICS...if a rapper doesnt got tight lyrics, they get NO play. We're past the mid 90s...lyrics are very important now. ORIGINALITY...even if you aint creative enough to come up with new concepts, make the shit distinctively your own. I only buy an album if its shit that Im not gonna hear from any other artist, ya know? VERSATILITY...I think a rapper shows skills if he can vary his shit a lot and still come dope on each track. A good album has songs with different moods, different paces, different concepts. And the artist has to be able to switch up their style.

As far as the production: Bangin beats that vary...I dont wanna hear the same type of beats throughout a whole album. Good sound quality...sometimes cats have tight ass liks, tight beats, but ruin it with wack ass sound quality.

the lyrics don't have to be amazing, but they need to have alot of things that you'll rewind to hear parts again. imagine if someone recorded an album where every bar is a gem , that is funny, impressive, you can relate too ect.!! you need a good voice too. you could have the best lyrics and beats in the world but i'm not playin anything by someone with a wack voice. there should be a slight variety between tracks but they should all be somewhat consistent. the beats should change alot too throughout the song, not just a beat for the verse and a slightly different one for the chorus - it should have a different beginning, chorus, verse, ending ect.

BEATS!

Beats Beats Beats!! If they beats don't come tight I can't fuck with the track no matter how tight the artist spits over it. The beats carry the whole album for me when I'm listenin'. Most rappers is always sayin' the same thing anyway, just in a different form or style, but to me in the end, it's all pretty much the same.

THE COVER 4 SURE lol jk
Id say the beats. for instance in some of the newer mac dre cds had tight lyrics but the beats were wack atleast in my opinion. if u got good beats, then comes good songs which equal a good album
