Well, from what I understand the old school definition was simply a rhyme that has not been recorded or put on wax.

But to me, when I hear the term 'freestyle' I expect to hear someone spitting off the top.

yeah a freestyle means impromtu improvisation over a beat, or even acapella.

i dont think theres another definition of fresstyle.

east coast 'freestyle' (the WRONG definition) is like, your rhyme that dont got shit to do with nothing...so like if i just spit a 16 about 70 different things, someone might call that 'freestyle'

A freestyle is when you create a rap off the top of your head. I fucking hate watching "freestyle battles" when someone's "boys" do like back up vocals, that just proves it's not a freestyle.

everyone knows the best freestyles are written
true but then it wouldnt really be considered a freestyle since its written down..but really i think the term freestyle is used out of context cuz if anybody ever did good in english class back in school or where ever they would know that usually when talking about freestyle is usually making a rhyme or writing something down that doesnt have one specific topic..so in conradiction to what i said at the beginning of this paragraph i would say that even if its written can still be considered a freestyle cuz it doesnt necessarily stay on one topic..

freestyles are songs over other peoples beats and samples on mixtapes, so an artist wont get sued, thats what the eastcoast made the shit.
