Each time I've gotten a tattoo done theyve given me a little tube of what they call Tattoo Goo-- I've gotten my tattoos done in three different spots and all three have given me the same tube. Its in between a gel and a ointment.
I've never heard of putting lotion on a tattoo tho'.. I have heard the Neosporin and A&D work as well..

VASELINE is all you need and dont drench it with it either... and stay out of the sun with it. ive got 15 tats all worked out fine with vaseline. even when i got a half sleve done thats all i used.... so i would go with that..

but ask your tattoo artist for his preference, cause its his work and he should know how to preserve his art.
