SAN DIEGO ? A West Coast Crips gang member was sentenced today to 30 years in federal prison for his role in a plot to shoot and kill two rival gang members in January 2001.

Eric Wells was convicted on April 9, 2003 of three counts of Violent Crimes in Aid of Racketeering and one count of using a firearm during a crime of violence.

Wells was sentenced by U.S. District Judge M. James Lorenz.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Linda A. Frakes said the jury found that Wells was a member of the West Coast Crips gang, an enterprise engaged in racketeering activity, and that the attempted murders were committed to promote the defendant's position with the Crips.

Duane Wicker was convicted in the same trial of one count of Violent Crimes in Aid of Racketeering. He previously was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Robert Adams and Robert Wood, leaders in the West Coast Crips, pleaded guilty on Feb. 28, 2003, Frakes said.

Adams was sentenced to 308 months in custody and Wood got 300 months.
