I'd like to get into pretty basic web design, html, maybe some java, css, or what eva (british accent).

Anyone know a good program, website, etc to start with?

I'd like something a bit more featured than Frontpage, although i dont really feel like having to hard code either (or do too much of it). I wouldnt call myself a complete newb but I wouldnt call myself a seasoned developer either.

I can put together stupid shit right now, but I'm looking to sort of up my game a bit.

I know Doberman or Deep Thought might be able to help me on this.

Word.

I started with a "wysiwyg" (point and click) program then went with good old notepad. It's not important to memorize how to code this or that, but rather how to tweak and fix problems in messed up code. Your graphic skills will help too.

I learned a lot of php, html and css working with Joomla. If you just starting out, I suggest using that. Joomla is a Content Management System. The underlying framework for any type of website is built in the system. The front end uses a template system that you can modify or change to WHATEVER you like. You can create your own templates and custom features in programs such as Dreamweaver. Why do that though if there is someting that will do the basic shit for you. Some might recommend Drupal CMS, but it's a lill more advanced than Joomla. It's Open Source and the support and documentation will get you further than a Dreamweaver tutorial. If you want to get your feet wet. I can set you up with an account on my servers so you can try it out free of charge.

two sites made in Joomla
mediazombie.com uses Joomla 1.5.x
hitsinglerecording.com uses Joomla 1.0.x

I took a basic html/css course a couple years back and I think what liqwid said about knowing how to tweak faulty code is the more important aspect of working w/ webdesign. For basic sites I would use a simple template from a program and then personalise with style sheets.
Aren't more people using java and flash now for there sites?

me and you are on the same page. If i was you i would download a bootlegg copy of ADOBE CREATIVE SUITE 3. Its expensive as fuck to buy, (unless you go to a school to take classes then they sell it to you cheaper) but i DLed a copy using VUZE. Adobe CS3 has photoshop, dreamweaver, among other softwares that work with each other in web design. But it's not very easy. I highly reccomend taking at least a few classes. They really helped a lot. I took 1 begginers photoshop class and learned HELLA shit, there is 2 more parts to the classes but i been playin around with it so much since then that i laerned a lot more. Dreamweaver is pretty complex too, im currently taking a class on that too. But i say thats how you should get started. that shit is pretty much the standard today.
