Found this:

What happens is that as the athlete consumes large amounts of water over the course of the event, blood plasma (the liquid part of blood) increases. As this takes place, the salt content of the blood is diluted. At the same time, the athlete is losing salt by sweating. Consequently, the amount of salt available to the body tissues decreases over time to a point where the loss interferes with brain, heart, and muscle function.

The official name for this condition is hyponatremia. The symptoms generally mirror those of dehydration (apathy, confusion, nausea, and fatigue), although some individuals show no symptoms at all. If untreated, hyponatremia can lead to coma and even death.
Ok, so it seems it can only occur if your sweating a lot, like if you're an athlete. But this guy had fans around him. Hmm

Bad luck man. I used to go to Chico, and the same fraternity had someone else die a couple of years ago. They lost their University association and national connections the first time -- they need to lock someone up this time.

actually I've heard about people dying from drinking too much water before. It can happen and I dont think it has to be just in a athletic situation.

but something does sound fishy about this case, i've drank so much water to the point that if i tried to drink anymore I knew I would just yak it up.

you can die from too much water. 5 gallons would definitely kill you in one day let alone one night. what happens is it dilutes your blood sugar and sodium levels so you basically go into shock and die. he also probably died partly from hypothermia cause of all that shit...

As a Chico State alum, I'm saddened to see another student lost in such a ridiculous manner.

yeah, it is physically impossible for a human being to drink a gallon of milk in 1 hour.
