RIVERSIDE -- Authorities are searching for a sniper who has been shooting at vehicles along freeways in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties.
More than two dozen vehicles have been targeted over the past few weeks.
At least six vehicles were struck Thursday along the 15, 10 and 215 freeways in the Riverside, San Bernardino and Rancho Cucamonga areas, according to CHP Officer Andrew Thompson.
In each case, the rear windows were shot out with "an unknown projectile -- probably a BB or a pellet," he said.
The shootings occurred at varying times and were probably carried out by someone in another vehicle close by, Thompson said.
The incidents have taken place along the 15 Freeway between the 138 Freeway to Sierra, and on the 10 and 215 freeways through Colton.
One driver said he was traveling northbound on the 15 Freeway when he heard a noise and his rear windshield shattered. He then spotted another vehicle on the roadway with the same damage.
No injuries have been reported.
Authorities have not yet retrieved any projectiles used in the attacks.
It's believed the sniper may have been in another vehicle traveling behind the victims.
There are varying reports on suspect vehicles, Thompson said, adding that one included a red pickup with a confederate flag in the rear window. Another person reported seeing a dark sport utility vehicle.
Anyone with information in the shootings, or anyone who sees anything out of the ordinary is asked to call 911 or CHP Riverside at (909) 383 4247.
