A good resource is www.kvr-vst.com They have every vst instrument listed and reviewed there, as well as a search engine that allows you to view only freeware synths. A great freeware synth to look into is called Synth1. For commercial ones, try Arturia Minimoog, Spectrasonics Trilogy, Spectrasonics Atmosphere, Native Instruments FM7, Linplug Albino, Linplug RMIV, and Novation V-Station.
