Any synth can be used for rap. It's just a matter of programming the patches you want.

Some of the ones I use are:
Arturia Minimoog V
GMedia MiniMonsta
GMedia Oddity
GMedia Imposcar
Luxonix Ravity
Linplug Albino
Linplug RMIV
Native Instruments FM-7
AAS Lounge Lizard

THE site for vst instruments is www.kvraudio.com

the proteus x is hard.. its the vst version of the proteus 2000, plus it comes with new sound banks, and you can now get the mo phatt, virtuoso, and planet earth sound sets for it for $50 a peice.. i got the hardware version of the proteus, and it sounds dead on.. well worth the $150

i use Novation Bass Station which is supposed to be the equivilant of the hardware by the same name and Novation V station which is equal to the K station hardware synth..... i also use Edirol Hyper Canvas for general midi sounds.....Edirol Orchestral for real sounding strings, brass, and woodwinds....Edirol Superquartet for some good real sounding guitars and pianos.....those the main ones i fucc wit right now....

VSTs are really starting to take over the world of production, no one is gonna be using workstations any more in the near future

i doubt that.. look at shit like korg oasys... vsts are coo.. but there still taxin the fuck outta cpus and aliasing occurs in vsts... imma hardware man tho.. so maybe im biased
You're going to get aliasing in any digital synth, but in high quality digital synths, 4x (or greater) oversampling is employed, which makes aliasing occur at inaudible frequencies. Hence, you don't hear aliasing in synths like Linplug Albino or GMedia Imposcar (you will hear aliasing in older synths such as NI Pro-53, where the slower target cpus kept developers from employing oversampling).

As far as cpu usage goes, i was able to recently do two full albums using the current crop of synths and effects on a way outdated Athlon XP 1600 (3 1/2 years old). So they certainly are usuable as is, particularly in conjunction with track freezing functions found in most modern sequencers.

Several top producers I know have switched to entirely software (vst) based setups, so it looks like that's gonna be the way of the future.

i actually sold all of my hardware (triton rack, 4 emu modules and a few synth boards) and went completly software. there is no denying that software is now just as good as the hardware being used. and if there is i sure havent seen any facts on it.

I'm a gear junkie and I'll tell you right now, software-based samplers and synths are just as powerful and robust. In some cases much more so. They arn't quite at the point where *I'm* willing to dump all my hardware and go software-only but you certainly could if you wanted to.

Bumpus mentioned that some top producers have switched to software-based setups. This is true and I can tell you that Rodney Jerkin (Darkchild) relies heavily on software now although he does still use some hardware.

yea i got my triton back and i tried re-introducing back into the set up and it just didnt sound the same to me. but i just found software more to my liking, i used to be a hardware nazi until figuring out how all the software worker together with ease. reason almost turned me off software because it was difficult to navigate through, but when i found out i could use it with the program i was already using i was happy.

i just cant justify going out and spending thousands for new hardware. i gave up doing serious sound modeling because its just to time consuming so if i get my hands on a program with 8 gigs of sounds im more then happy. not to mention that even though i dont pay for most of the software i have its still relativly cheap compared to hardware. i think eventually hardware and software will evolve into its on beast, i have seen something to the extent of a hardware rack you can import VSTi's into. i cant remember what its called though.

I always hear dudes talkin bout how low quality software is, i was begining to give in and buy some hardware, but hearin shit like that makes me stick with what i got.
