I've always been somewhat skeptical about software synths n such because I'm from the old school and I love my gear. But I've been gettin' into sampling alot the past year and have decided to incorporate it more into my creations. I recently was talked into trying N.I. Battery.....and I must say that it has expanded my horizons. I've been on a 5 day downloading spree trying to find everything I can (mostly drums) on Kazaa & on the web (hence the reason for the sample thread). I have come up on some decent shit and am ready to start bangin' out some knocks.

I have a question though.....being that I'm pretty new to VST's and all. Why is it that when you hit the key on the board there is a split second of latency until the sound is actually triggered? And is it possible to adjust this latency? It's kinda irritating trying to make a beat and having the sound hit later than it should.

Anybody?

What you're talking about is latency. You're likely using a soundcard with poor drivers. You want to get a decent soundcard with ASIO drivers. Try something like a MAudio Audiophile 2496 or STAudio DSP24 Value.

I suggest using either Linplug RMIV or Ddr-008 instead of Battery because it does not have any filters.

I've been messin with some VST shit lately myself. Are you talkin , delays from your computer keyboard? I noticed that as well. Bumpus advised me to get a Midi keyboard controller for Reason 2.5 Probably would have to get some type of midi interface to plug into, then from there to the pc. Could be the computer itself!
I'm old school too....well not that old I'm stickin to tha gear. A really good example of VST's is Ecay Uno's CD "Mental Scars"
that nigga got busy for real with it. The entire CD was produced by him.

lol trust me, d-sane got a good soundcard, there is a latency issue, but there are adjustments you can make in your midi options, im not sitting in front of my pc so i cant tell you exactly what it is.

but i had that problem as well, plus since you are running everything off your pc, if you have too much shit running at once then that will cause the problem as well, but just check your midi settings, and you also want to check some of those samples cuz alot of them have some bullshit ass dead air in front of them as well.......oh and your welcome about battery.....lol

hey make me a copy of what you been downloading, i got a whole bunch of new stuff too that ill trade with you.

The problem is one of two things. Either your audio interface isn't face enough or the buffers need to be set lower in your interface control panel. Grab the newest drivers for your card, set the buffers as low as you can in card properties, and set Cubase to use the ASIO for your card.

Which audio interface are you using btw?

One more thing.. The more you get into using samples and VSTI's, the more harddisk activity you'll use. If you're using IDE harddrives then you can wind up with heavy CPU load for disk-accessing. If you run into this problem, just pick up a SCSI controller & harddrive. That will take all the disk-access load off the CPU and free it back up.

Just figured I'ld throw that in incase you didn't already know.

Right now I'm pullin' the samples off my new SATA drive......but I could always move them over to one of my 2 SCSI drives. I'm pretty sure that's not the problem though because when I tried to use one of the soft synths last year I was having the same problem.

I'm runnin' a new Mia card (I gave my Layla to Skunt. And of course I also have the latest drivers.) on a P4 2.8 800mhz with 1gig of ram.....she's a beauty. I also have 4 HD's.....2 SCSI (UW2)....1 external IDE/USB 2.0 and a SATA 150.

Here's my set-up BTW.....it's not much but it get's the job done.

I like the filters....what's wrong with filters? Plus I couldn't find the DDR-008 anywhere online (cracked that is...lol) so I could try it out.
I was implying that Battery does not have filters, but Dr-008 and RMIV do have filters. Filters IMO are pretty essential to a drum sampler. But if you still have issues with latency, it is likely your buffer settings for your soundcard driver.

I haven't had a chance to fuck with it too much....but I thought it had filters? I know you can adjust all kinds of shit....

Yeah....I'm gonna try and adjust my buffer settings and see if that works. Thanks for the advice ya'll.....
