Some of my favorite VA synths are Linplug Albino, Novation K-Station, and DiscoDSP Discovery. They are very flexible with routing and modulation and have great sounding filters.

For sampled instruments, you could try SampleTank 2 or Hypersonic, or you could use a sampler like Halion or Kontact with some sample libraries.

Novation V-Station and Bass Station are decent. I use Halion for building multisamples which works pretty well. I messed with Hypersonic for a quick minute but that was it. I keep hearing good things about it though.

Also, as Bumpus mentioned, Discovery is supposed to be pretty nice too. Model-E and Moog Modular V is you are looking for good moog emulation.

The stock patches wern't too great but I got some custom patches from a cat I know who programmed some nice ones. If I had to choose between the two, I'ld go with Moog Modular too!

I was able to program a lot of decent patches for Model-E, but you could really hear the oscillator aliasing and they sounded a little thin. Since it was one of the first VST instruments, I think Steinberg was concerned with cpu usage for pIII cpus, so they skimped too much.

For pads, check out Rhino and for rhodes, definately check out Lounge Lizard.

Another quality synth is Native Instruments FM-7 (Yamaha DX-7 emulation).
I'd highly recommend Linplug Albino as my current favorite. It's presets are programmed by the same guy who programmed most of the Access Virus presets and it has great oscillators and two types of multi-mode filters.

How would you work a software synth program into an existing studio set up that includes an mpc 2000 Proteus 2000 and a Roland JD990 and Recording with a Digi 001 ProTools setup?
