I'm pretty sure surveillance is gonna cost a lot no matter what.

Just get a fake surveillance camera and a shotgun from Big 5, you'll be set, lol.

depends on what kind of quality you are talking.

Do you want a DVR setup or do you have a few old VCR's whereas you only need the cameras? Or do you not need/want to record?

Yep. I know quite a few people who use these. They have an actual brick and mortar store in my town, and yeah I have been impressed with their price to quality ratio.

Costco's got some nice stuff, DVR, but you gotta have the $$$

Look in your local phone books and see if you have a local Harbor Freight anyways because they got great prices on all kinds of stuff, much more than they do online.

but isnt recording audio like this illegal?
My former apt manager put them up not giving a damn lol, needless to say I moved out.

If it's your property, you should be cool, and if you notice in many fast food places and national chains, they don't announce it, but there will be little stickers that state not only video recording happens there, but audio as well.
