video ipod / converting dvds question??

there are programs out there that allow you to convert dvds into apple files to play on the ipod correct?
what is the best program and do they work well?
are they free?

do the ipods only let you play .mov files? I was going to get one but if this is true i dont want to waste my time converting all of my music videos to .mov format.

The iPod only plays MPEG-4/H.264 encoded files......iTunes can now convert the vids you have(right click>convert selection for iPod), if it cant convert the file type then you gotta use a converter such as Videora(free, and the easiest to use)......for movies you need to rip them to your computer first and then run them through Videora...
