^^^^ I usually just get a Combinator and start fucking with it. I would just use some lofi plugins to make what you have "Grit" such as the free iZotope Vinyl plugin found here - http://izotope.com/products/audio/vinyl/ Also be creative and have a open mind. Like I'll take some shit in Pro Tools and come out with some "Fucking Ear Candy". I'd say stick with some lofi shit and just have it in your head what your wanting, pick the sounds and play em'. The plugs can help you but you supply the brain homie!!!

yeah i was a bit confused on how the question was layed out. applying a bit crusher to a track will make shit sound gritty and give you that old school 80s sound on drums and shit. if broke down enough you will have something that will sound like old school NES or atari sounds. I don't think you can do that in reason, if you can let me know. that feature could prove useful. I've fucked with bit crushers in logic and other DAWs

I'm sure you can get a solid bit crusher in any plug in bundle, it probably comes stock on top end daw programs, i don't know any by name but if you take an audio track and smash it into 8 or 4 bits it will sound like an old school video game because that was the audio capability that video games had in the 80s
