Victor Ortiz has been in and around Kansas City for a week or more now. He is telling reporters that his camp has been in discussion with Mayweather Jr. Camp about setting up a fight.

He told reporters that they are discussiing September 17th, 2011 as a date. Which makes sense because that is close to Mexican Independence Day.

This was being reported on 810 WHB sports radio here in Kansas City.

Just letting my boxing folks know.

I for one hope it goes down. It makes the most sense for Ortiz right now. He would get a big payday fight and winner would fight Pacquio most likely.

Reportedly Mayweather is calling this a "tune up" fight.........

mayweather said today all rumors are false and he's not thinking about boxing right now, not even pacquiao.

who knows though, floys is full of shit most of the time so its possible they are working on something.

would be a huge payday for Ortiz

I had doubts about Ortiz before he fought Berto and he proved me wrong (although I was rooting for him) However I dont think he ready for either Pac or Mayweather.IMO

It's the Baldomir game plan. Take a B class fighter (Baldomir/Ortiz), who looks great against a big named opponent (Judah/Berto) then challenge them.

Everyone knows Mayweather would school Ortiz. This is below a tune up fight.

Good for Ortiz though, being thrown in the mix.

Baldomir was THE champ though for whatever that's worth.

It'll be mildly intriguing because the knock on ortiz is that he's chinny but I think he can probably survive what Floyd would throw at him. He's bigger and stronger than floyd and can box and punch. Wouldn't be surprised to see a ton of media hype around this if it were to happen

Floyd is 34 .....Ortiz is 24....

Floyd hasn't fought in a year.

Say what you want, but it makes a difference.

I would take Ortiz. I'd like to see the Odd's Vegas would give for that fight.

Ortiz literally has zero chance.

that's not a knock on ortiz it's just that there are elite fighters and then there are floyd & pacquiao. They are far above anyone right now.

Plus, ortiz doesn't have the style to beat floyd and he doesn't throw any jabs (which certainly can help when fighting someone like floyd).

It would be a long night for ortiz, a lot of him coming forward trying to get close, getting countered, floyd moving laterally and backwards at times and setting up traps.

I don't think they are THAT far above Martinez or Donaire.

Floyd is excellent, don't get me wrong. But he's also been inactive for a year. How many upsets have there been in boxing. Ortiz has A chance, though it may not be a huge chance. I think Ortiz would look huge in the ring and he's probably the best puncher that Floyd has faced other than Mosley, Gatti and Corrales. Ortiz probably hits a lot harder at 147 than the Gatti Floyd faced that never hit him or Corrales at 130.

donaire is getting up there, martinez I'm not sold on him yet until he fights someone like Dmitry Pirog at 160. He looked great against Williams and for most of the rounds against Pavlik and the goat herder from Kazakhstan but that doesn't tell me a whole lot.

You need a lot more then power to beat floyd. How would ortiz get inside on floyd with no jab? he's just going to walk forward like he did against berto? he'd eat leather all night long.

*Gatti was not a big puncher at the weight (140) and at the time floyd fought him at.

Is the goat herder from Kazakhstan supposed to be Dizzy from the Ukraine? Pirog beat Jacobs, a solid but untested prospect in a silly "title" fight and Jantuah. Dizzy has wins over Santos (when he mattered and was beating guys like Margarito), Julio (when people were on his nuts), and then guys like Konecny & Lujan.

Martinez embarrassed him like no one thought possible and if he comes back in form I'd pick Dizzy over Pirog with no problem. Pirog would still be a prospect if it wasn't for a ridiculous vacant title fight let's not get it twisted.

Dzinziruk also never fought at 160 pounds. He has a somewhat decent resume at 154 pounds and good amateur background but it's the equivilant of say Jermain Taylor beating 154 pound Kasim Ouma or Cory Spinks in a middleweight title defense. Pretty decent win at the time, noteworthy, nothing great.

Pirog is a legit 160 pound fighter and he has a title. His resume isn't the greatest yet, but so what? He would be a great fight for Martinez and it would prove a lot to me, much more than a guy moving up from a lower weight class.
