Rappers Like E-40 See Vallejo As A Good Place To Launch Careers

Vallejo's music roots run deep, especially its rap artists.
Whether it be the most well-known and commercially successful rapper E-40, or the early performers like Mac Dre and N2DEEP, Vallejo rappers have made a dent in the music industry.
-Mac Dre
In 1989, Mac Dre released his first album "Young Black Brotha" on Young Black Brotha Records. The single "Too Hard For The Funky Radio" still receives radio play to this day
-N2DEEP
IN 1992, N2DEEP, a Vallejo-based rap group, released the record "Back To The Hotel" which went gold. The group has since disbanded, but members have gone on to form other music groups like Scapegoat Wax and Latino Velvet Clique.
-Mac Mall
In 1992, Hogan High School graduate Mac Mall, aka Jamal Rocker, released "Illegal Business." He went on to produce two more albums (Untouchable in 1995 and Illegal Business 2000).
Mac Mall founded his own label Sessed Out Records.
-E-40
E-40, aka Earl Stevens, received notoriety in 1994 when he hit the charts with his first single "Captain Save 'Em Tho". The single also featured his longtime group The Click. The group features family members Suga T(sister), B-Legit (cousin) and D-Shot (brother).
E-40 was declared one of Rolling Stone's Top 50 entertainers in 1998.
E-40 is singed to mega-label Jive Records.
He's put out such hit singles as "Big Ballin' With My Homies." The 34-year-old Blackhawk resident started by selling his tapes from the back of his truck and recently put out the hit album "Grit & Grind."
-Young Lay
Young Lay, aka Lathan Williams, received early accolades when he released his first single "All About My Fetti." The single came off the "New Jersey Drive" Soundtrack, which went gold, and received substantial airplay throughout the Bay Area.
Tragedy later struck Yougn Lay when he was shot and then in a seperate incident his girlfriend 17-year-old Daphne Boyden was murdered in May 1996. His infant son, Le-Zhan Williams, was abducted and only recently returned.
Williams released a CD titled "Unsolved Mysteries" after appearing on the television show in an attempt to locate his son.
Williams is serving a prison term for grand theft.
