It's been some time since we've heard about any lawsuits against Microsoft over the Xbox 360's disc-scratching issue. A document in one pending suit was unsealed last week and asserts that Microsoft discovered the problem prior to launch and had multiple options to fix it, all of which the company rejected at the time. We've heard the argument before, but there are a few new alleged details here.

The three options listed were increase the magnetic field of disc holder (rejected because it would interfere disc opening and closing mechanism), slowing disc rotation speed (would have slowed game loads) and installing small bumpers (would cost an additional $35 to $75 million). According to the document, Microsoft's solution of appending the manual and offering a disc replacement program was deemed insufficient by company employees via an internal email. The plaintiffs are still seeking class action status while Microsoft hopes the courts will end up disc-arding the whole issue (har).

Microsoft Responds to Xbox 360 Disc Scratching Allegations
By Mark Wilson, 12:40 PM on Wed Dec 17 2008, 3,758 views

While recently unsealed documents suggests that Microsoft knew about Xbox 360 disc scratching problems all along, Microsoft has finally stepped forward to respond to the allegations.

Speaking with Edge, a Microsoft spokesperson explained:

While we have had some users contact us with concerns about scratched discs, it is much less than 1 percent of the total Xbox 360 user base...Xbox 360 is designed so that it will not damage a game disc as long as the console is not moved while the disc is spinning. Too much movement of any game console, not just Xbox 360, can cause scratches on a disc." The spokesperson said that this was the reason Microsoft added a warning on the disc tray that needed to be removed before the first time of use.

What do you think? Did Microsoft do due diligence? [Edge via Kotaku]

I've only had this happen to me once, and that was because I turned the 360 from horizontal to vertical while it was on. Ruined my Far Cry game.

But I've had the RROD 6 times now since November 2005.

Well, 2 of the times, I just sold the dead ones for $100 on Craigslist, and bought a new one. The other times I bought the extended warranty from Game Crazy like I should have and got them for free.

Also, they kept letting me keep the hard drives, so it wasn't too bad.

That's bullshit. Baffles me how so many people just put up with that shit like it's acceptable.
Yeah, I hated it but at the same time, I have hella games for the 360, plus I'm coo off the PS3. I'm an XBOX guy, and even though it was fucking bullshit to have to go through that.

It was either that, or no video games at all. So it was a fairly easy choice.

I've had to send mine in something like three or four times, but for me it's because of the great games. I've bought a lot of games and I can't see myself getting rid of so many awesome games. It also helps that MS compensated me for my troubles.
