Thursday, March 03, 2005 - Universal Records Signs Chamillionaire

Sought After Houston-Based Rapper Poised To Break Nationally

Universal Records has signed Houston based underground rap artist Chamillionaire. The freestyle prince will make his major label debut later this summer. Chamillionaire, also known as the 'Mixtape Messiah' has become famous in the dirty south mix-tape game for his cutting edge lyrics and melodic, street-tinged style.

Major labels have been in hot pursuit of the no-holds-barred MC since his auspicious debut on the Texas indie scene a few years ago. The talented rapper has appeared on countless compilations, and has two recent albums under his belt; both released on Chamillitary Records and certified 'hood platinum.' Chamillionaire's first CD, Get Ya Mind Correct was released in 2002, and his sophomore effort, Mixtape Messiah in 2004. The latter broke underground precedent by hitting the streets as a three-disc set.

Through word of mouth, Chamillionaire's prowess has spread beyond Texas and Louisiana with Mixtape Messiah, enlarging his reputation not only among southern hip-hop purists, but attracting the attention of major record labels executives and distribution outlets. "They'll (record stores) buy anything with Chamillionaire's name on it. He's one of our top sellers," said Matt Kivett of Gonzalez Music- a popular distribution company in the south.

Chamillionaire is currently working on his Universal debut titled The Sound of Revenge with producers, Swizz Beatz, David Banner, Play N Skillz (Lil Flip), etc. He is also slated to be a featured artist on the upcoming The Longest Yard soundtrack.

I aint tryin to hate but I see this as "yet another southern rapper that is just gonna be behind the scenes on universal till he decides to leave"
Nah, i think ur wrong homie.. if u heard Chamillionaire, he got flowz, voice, delivery, singing, a status that can be adapted to mtv.. i can almost gaureentee he go plat. Unless like u said Universal does something to fuck things up. But i cant really see that.. be cause they basically gave him "The deal he wanted" he's got his side label on Chamillitary Ent/Universal.. so i doubt they would give him that if they werent gonna give him a chance. I mean look at the status Baby Bash is at now.. I can see Chamillionaire in that type of spotlight, Universal gives him just a lil bit of a push and Bash does the rest.. i see Koopa doin the samething.. just wait.. and come back here when u see im right.. awready...

Im happy for Cham but this news really sucks for us fans. Now Universal are gonna force him to put out some weak pop rap, just like Lil Flips last CD. Im tired of all my favorite artists going pop, shit just aint the same. Hopefully Chamillionaire will prove me wrong...
