Roy Nelson vs. Fabricio Werdum slotted for UFC 143 in February

A heavyweight bout between Roy Nelson (16-6 MMA, 3-2 UFC) and the returning Fabricio Werdum (14-5-1 MMA, 2-2 UFC) has been slotted for February's UFC 143 event.

Werdum will jump from Strikeforce to the UFC, where he fought from 2007 to 2008, as part of the long-rumored move.

MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today confirmed the bout with event sources. MMAWeekly.com first reported it.

UFC 143 takes place on the eve of the NFL's Super Bowl, Feb. 4, at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The night's main card airs on pay-per-view, and Nelson vs. Werdum is expected to be part of the broadcast.

Nelson, who won "The Ultimate Fighter 10," likely staved off a UFC release with a third-round TKO of Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic at UFC 137 in October. Prior to the much-needed win, the fan favorite and former IFL champion suffered back-to-back decision losses to Junior Dos Santos and Frank Mir.

Werdum won his first three fights after he left the UFC for Strikeforce in 2008. His first two came against Mike Kyle and Antonio Silva, and then in his next bout, he earned the 2010 World MMA Awards "Submission of the Year" trophy for his 69-second armbar/triangle choke of Fedor Emelianenko. The performance snapped Emelianenko's legendary 27-fight win streak.

However, in the opening round of Strikeforce's heavyweight grand prix earlier this year, Werdum suffered a unanimous-decision loss to Alistair Overeem in a flat performance.

The latest UFC 143 card includes:

Carlos Condit vs. Nick Diaz (for interim welterweight title)
Josh Koscheck vs. Mike Pierce
Roy Nelson vs. Fabricio Werdum*
Renan Barao vs. Scott Jorgensen
Erik Koch vs. Dustin Poirier
Alex Caceres vs. Edwin Figueroa
Jorge Lopez vs. Amir Sadollah
Rafael Natal vs Michael Kuiper

WAR RABID LAMAS

Replacement Ricardo Lamas meets Dustin Poirier at UFC 143 in Las Vegas

With Erik Koch (13-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) injured, fellow featherweight Ricardo Lamas (11-2 MMA, 2-0 UFC) has stepped as a replacement at UFC 143.

As UFC officials recently announced, Lamas now meets Dustin Poirer (11-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) at the Super Bowl weekend event.

Koch was forced off the card on Tuesday due to an undisclosed injury he suffered in training camp. Like Koch and Poirer, though, Lamas also is a fast-rising contender and could be close to a title shot with a victory.

Featuring an interim welterweight title bout between former Strikeforce champ Nick Diaz and former WEC titleholder Carlos Condit, "UFC 143: Diaz vs. Condit" takes place Feb. 4 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

The night's main card airs on pay-per-view, and Lamas vs. Poirier could be part of the broadcast.

Lamas, a former WEC fighter, looks for his third straight win in the UFC following a TKO victory over Matt Grice and a submission win over Cub Swanson. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt, the Illinois-based fighter is now 5-1 over his past six fights, and the lone loss came to Yuri Alcantara in the WEC's final show.

The 22-year-old Poirier hammered Pablo Garza in the standup portion of their UFC on FOX 1 fight this past month before coaxing a tap-out by D'Arce choke in the second round. Previously, he outpointed savvy striker Jason Young at UFC 131 and handed near-contender Josh Grispi his first octagon loss at UFC 125. He's now won four straight fights, including one in his former home, the WEC.

Matt Brown vs. Chris Cope slated for UFC 143 in Las Vegas

A welterweight bout between Matt Brown (12-11 MMA, 5-5 UFC) and Chris Cope (5-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) has been added to February's UFC 143 event.

UFC officials today announced that verbal agreements are in place for the fight.

UFC 143 takes place on the eve of the NFL's Super Bowl, Feb. 4, at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

The night's main card airs on pay-per-view. However, Brown vs. Cope is expected to be part of the preliminary card, which is expected to air on FX.

Win or lose, Brown usually puts on a good fight, which is probably the reason he's getting another fight despite a recent 1-4 skid. "The Ultimate Fighter 7" cast member made a quick splash in the UFC and won four of his first five fights, and the lone loss came via split to then-unbeaten Dong Hyun Kim. But after a three-fight skid, he rebounded for a decision victory over John Howard at UFC on Versus 4. However, he was then choked out by Seth Baczynski at this past month's UFC 139 event.

He now meets Cope, a "TUF 13" semifinalist who earned a decision victory over Chuck O'Neil in his official UFC debut on the undercard of the show's live finale. However, this past month at UFC 138, Che Mills stopped him with knees and punches in a 40-second TKO loss. Like Brown, the Arena MMA fighter likely is fighting for his job at UFC 143.

The latest UFC 143 card includes:

Carlos Condit vs. Nick Diaz (for interim welterweight title)
Josh Koscheck vs. Mike Pierce
Roy Nelson vs. Fabricio Werdum
Renan Barao vs. Scott Jorgensen
Ricardo Lamas vs. Dustin Poirier
Alex Caceres vs. Edwin Figueroa
Jorge Lopez vs. Amir Sadollah
Matt Brown vs. Chris Cope
Rafael Natal vs Michael Kuiper

Justin Edwards vs. Mike Stumpf added to UFC 143 in Las Vegas

A welterweight fight between Justin Edwards (7-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) and Mike Stumpf (11-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) has been added to February's UFC 143 lineup.

UFC officials today announced that verbal agreements are in place for the bout.

UFC 143, which is headlined by an interim welterweight title fight between Nick Diaz and Carlos Condit, takes place on the eve of the NFL's Super Bowl, Feb. 4, at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

The night's main card airs on pay-per-view. However, Edwards vs. Stumpf is expected to be part of the preliminary card, which is expected to air on FX.

Edwards, a cast member on "The Ultimate Fighter 13," suffered a split-decision defeat to Clay Harvison on the undercard of the show's live finale. He got a second UFC fight despite the loss, and he then earned a decision victory over Jorge Lopez. However, this past month at UFC 138, he took a late-notice fight with John Maguire and suffered a decision defeat.

The Ohio-based Edwards likely is fighting for his UFC job when he meets Stumpf, who also needs a win. The Team Curran fighter made his promotional debut in September at UFC Fight Night 25 but suffered a submission loss to T.J. Waldburger. Prior to the bout, the EliteXC vet and longtime XFO fighter was on a 5-1 run.

The latest UFC 143 card includes:

Carlos Condit vs. Nick Diaz (for interim welterweight title)
Josh Koscheck vs. Mike Pierce
Roy Nelson vs. Fabricio Werdum
Renan Barao vs. Scott Jorgensen
Ricardo Lamas vs. Dustin Poirier
Alex Caceres vs. Edwin Figueroa
Jorge Lopez vs. Amir Sadollah
Rafael Natal vs Michael Kuiper
Justin Edwards vs. Mike Stumpf
