Muslim, Arab and Sikh groups say reports of backlash crimes are trickling in, and they fear an increase if the war in Iraq drags on.

Advocates who track such incidents say they've heard about a dozen potential hate crimes — most involving verbal harassment or property damage to Arabs, Muslims and Sikhs — since the war began last week.

"The longer the war goes on and the higher the number of American casualties there, I think probably you can make a correlation there would be more hate crimes and harassment against Arab-Americans and those perceived to be," said Laila Al-Qatami, a spokeswoman for the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee.

In Burbank, Ill., an explosive device was thrown into a Muslim family's van, destroying it. Police were investigating whether it was a hate crime.

At the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, someone scrawled "Suicide bomb yourselves" in permanent marker on a display board at the Muslim Student Association's offices. In Eugene, Ore., a man was charged with a hate crime after he approached a Sikh woman's car and pointed both index fingers at her, pretending to shoot.

The Sikh Coalition has placed ads in Punjabi-language media urging people to report incidents. After the Sept. 11 attacks, Sikhs were mistakenly associated with Osama bin Laden because they wear turbans and grow beards as signs of their faith.

"People are misinformed about who Sikhs are," said Harpreet Singh, the coalition's director of community relations, adding that someone spit on his car as he drove recently from New York to Washington, D.C.

Earlier this week, two teenagers were charged with committing a hate crime for allegedly smashing a window at a Villa Park, Ill., mosque as about 100 people prayed inside on March 11.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations has distributed "safety kits" to mosques, community leaders and others with tips on preventing hate crimes, developing relationships with law enforcement, safeguarding legal rights and responding to anti-Muslim incidents.

Some mosques have canceled activities and are carefully watching newcomers, said Omar Haydar, executive director of the council's Chicago chapter.

"It's unfortunate," he said. "The mosque is supposed to make people feel welcome, not someplace where you should be scrutinized."

Advocates agreed the backlash attacks are not comparable to those in the year after the Sept. 11 attacks.

"There are a lot of variables to determine whether or not this will be a severe backlash — how long the war lasts, if there are increasing American casualties, if there are, God forbid, terrorist attacks in retaliation for the war," said Hodan Hassan, a spokeswoman for the council.

Just postin this up to share the knowledge.
There's thousands if not millions of Americans who are discriminating Arabs and people of Islamic belief.
This is bullshit and it's a testament to the ignorance that plagues Americans in general.

I can't even speak for the fucking morons who discriminate the poor Indian Sikhs because they mistake them for Muslims.

Fucking ignorant hypcrites....

I have a friend who lives in Texas, and he was telling me that after 9-11, people were going around and beating up anyone who looked like they were from the Middle-East.

He said some people who were going to make it an annual event.....

@gimpy,

Do you know what race did the people consist of?
I'm reffering to the folks who were going around beatin up on Middle Eastern people.

I'm just curious to see how many closet racists are there in this free country.

Muthafuckas think we're still in them "good ole days"....
You know...I never realized how good we have it here in Cali.

I've been to Texas, Ohio, and Wisonsin, and I have never seen so many prejudice/racist people in my life...Wisconsin being the worst.

It was almost as if I was in another country. Nigger this, and Nigger that...I've never heard that here in Cali. But it's extremely common in those states.

Sure, the big cities are not that bad, but the smaller towns are pretty bad.

Very true.
I think white cats who are open minded should start talking sense into these people's minds. It's the only way we'll ever have a chance at ending racism.

It's very common to find racist folks all over the mid-west.
I think the fact that there's hardly any people of color in these states has a lot to do with it....
Hence, ignorance....

Wisconsin?!?

no shit?

that would be the last place I'd expect to see racism.
I was surprised at the degree of racism. And it was from the younger generation (18-25).

"I hate Niggers"

"I'm gonna beat that Niggers ass"

These were the types of comments that I was hearing.

It was a real wake up call.

The weird thing is that they all listen to rap music and call each other "Nigga", but they are really racist. Everyone out there was bumpin Coo Coo Cal, but then go start a fight with a Black guy.

Good thread. I love living in the Bay, people are so cool and open minded. Sometimes I don't realize how bad it is in other parts of the country. I live in Marin, which is basically all rich, white people. There are also a lot of Jews. Most people are still cool though. After 9/11, a lot of my neighbors and others in Marin let me know that they support me and know that I didn't have anything to do with any of that shit. You would have thought that these people would have given me trouble, but they go out of their way to help you and shit.

I HIGHLY disagree. I've lived all over Cali and DC, and VA. White folks(IN GENERAL) are racist as hell everywhere.
