Alot of you know that retail in this industry has been suffering for several reasons including but not limited to high prices, bad locations, file sharing, and rampant bootlegging. The latest victim in this retail mess has been Wherehouse Music as you have seen many of them close over the last few months since they announced their bankruptcy.

Even in bankruptcy the industry hoped and prayed that Wherehouse would make it out of the re-organization process and once again be the player in West Coast rap that it was...well, this isn't going to happen. Retail conglomerate and corporate evil, TransWorld Corporation (based in Albany, NY) has purchased the remianing Wherehouse Stores and will change them all to FYE Stores like they did Camelot and others and make them even more lifeless, and cookie cutter style, over priced retailers.

This is an important event to hip-hop as a whole but specifically Bay Area and West Coast Rap because Wherehouse has always been the biggest supporter of our cause outside of Mom & Pop stores and certain Tower stores, largely due to the fact that Violet Brown is a true champion of hip-hop and music lover.

Violet Brown has also been a long time friend to me and Rob Nonies and has helped us in so many ways throughout the years. Violet is as much a brand name as Wherehouse was having forged so many important relationships in her 25 years at the Wherehouse includingbeing the Executive Producer of the GOLD selling Prioirty Records compilation "And Then There Was Rap..." as well as being on the Source's hip-hop elite lists for five years straight. Violet is a prtner in RapMap.com along with Vamps and myself and also has several major things in the works so watch for her to make a major dent in the game.

On September 23, the music management and buying staff were told that next Wednesday October 1 would be their last day. Sadly, this includes long-time staffers such as Kevin Milligan, Toni
Miller, Violet Brown, Bob Bell, Zane Plesk and Steve Mandel. While not confirmed, I have also heard that the advertising and marketing dept will be experiencing the same shortly.

There are approx 35 stores planned for liquidation in the next few weeks (or sooner). For those of us that have worked with Wherehouse in any capacity, today was truly a sad day and the end of an era.

Looking forward, Trans World will most likely treat this new addition to their family as a very precious flower that they will nurture and grow. Besides having invested $35,000,000 and assuming debt, this marks their first major entry into the west coast which has been a long term goal. One would anticipate that the remaining stores will be quickly restored and remodeled.

While it will take a little time to assess how we all best proceed with marketing our product in the new environment, make no mistake: California, the Pacific NW, Sotuthwest and surrounding states are strong, vibrant and growing markets where lots of music buyers continue to shop.

Support independent rap, god knows we need it...

TKO!! Where you at dog? You know what I'm going through you were there in the good old days.

that'z BAMMER!!!

I guarantee once they all change over to them FYE stores, there will be no more used cds for sale.......count on that

and even more overpriced than when they were Wherehouse. All The Wherehouse's around my area are just as overpriced as them FYE stores

All I ever buy at the Wherehouse is used shit and occasionally a new cd if the price is right.

Another sad day for the Bay.....It seems the stack of weight holding us down just gets heavier and heavier. Hopefully soon maybe the stack will fall and the Bay will rise. It's all on us, the fans.

Best of luck to Violet Brown and all the people affected by this. Stay strong and keep making it happen behind the scenes.

SUPPORT BAY AREA RAP......if you don't, you really shouldn't be here.

1 luv

Not only is independent rap at risk due to monopolies developing in the music business, so is independent thought. The majors are developing the ability to control what we hear. Clear Channel already owns the majority of radio stations in the US, controlling what is heard on the radio and making it extremely difficult for any artist not on a major record label to be heard. Now there is a monopoly developing in the retail portion of the music industry. The RIAA are attempting to destroy music sharing over the internet, yet the price of a CD is rediculously expensive. It is no coincidence that music nowadays is unimaginative cookie cutter crap and it is becoming increasingly difficult to find quality independent music.

Thank you for passing along this info Brandon...I spoke with Leonard Singer bout this 2 days ago...I knew it was gonna happen...the shit is sad man. Not that the hustle was easier with them there, but it's gonna be alot harder for us indie's to stay alive now....at least us virtual new comers.

Honestly thats just a temporary bright side. Those that live in the Bay (or near bye) we lucky cause we have places like Ameoba and Rasputins, but alot of areas dont so trying to pick up cds at resonable prices is gonne be next to impossible (used or on sale) and like B-12 is saying, a major outlet for Bay artists is no longer there....

Well Brandon....I was there when they first went into that Chapter 7 or 11 shit...way back when....and working for that company...I could see where the problems were...hell almost anyone working there could tell what needed to be changed or removed...spending was a big thing with wherehouse....and I think they spent their money in the wrong places at the wrong time...either bought too much or bought too little...management sucked too (work politics) anyways, that's the past.....in a way it's sad, but in a way I'm not surprised at all to see this happen...

But back in the day's when we used to do them in-stores and stuff....shit was lovely....that was the era yay area was on top....oh well, it could happen again if people are hungry enough to bring the bay back...

make good music people will buy it.

some always wont, if it wasnt free they wouldnt cop anyway.

it hurt and helps sales.

but i will never buy a cd untill i download it and soak it. cause 99% of shit is just plain wack.

wherehouse i dont cop shit at. but it will hurt alot of artist. espcialy picking up sales from mainstream listiners given under ground a chance.

Basically what MeloTrauma said ...

Can't stop evolution.

The way I see things, this is only the beginning. Until the music 'business' totally evolves into the next phase of how it is going to work, this type of thing is going to be happening all over the place. Thank technology. Cats better get used to creating music as a hobby and not as a profession.

That fuckin sucks. Now I can't do the 5 for 1 deal no more, dammit. The wherehouse has been my source for bay rap for many years, now I gotta go to back door and pay $17 for a cd. I try to sell them my cd's but they only give me $2 store credit and turn around and sell it for $16.98 cuz it's "rare & out of print." Can't I sue em for false advertisement? I mean they put "rare & out of print" stickers on 2002 releases! THey don't know shit about rap but just this one dude is really coo tho.
