I have a homie that tried all that music stuff befor ( i.e. underground rap). And i was told by him that when you drop a cd you only make about 50-75 cents profit off each cd you sell. I was like dame if that is so then you dont really make much money at all! Thats why most people try to do concerts an stuff. Any word if this is tru or is it all depending on what kinda deal you have have with your label?

I think your friend was referring to artists on a major label. Indepedent artists have more control over their products and less people to go through, and thus make a bigger profit in return. That is why you always hear rappers in murder dog and shit say that they can make as much as a rapper who sells 500,000 units selling only 50-100,000 records.

I'll break it down for ya. Artists that are signed to a major label don't see any money untill all the expenses are paid for. For example, let's say "Fuck You Records" spends $50,000 to produce, advertise, market, press an album. When the cd starts selling they start to collect money from distributors. Once they have made thier $50,000 back then they have a deal where they share the additional profit with the artist, producer or whoever based on points or percentages. Major label artists have to sell a lot of cds to make money becuase the label has so much money invested in them. Independant artists make thier own label and pay for everything themselfs. Some times they press thier own cds too or get a pressing deal with a distributor. The independant label sells thier cds directly to the distributor or retail store thus cutting out the major label. That means that all the profit goes directly to the indie label and no one else. Get it? I could go on and on and into more detail.

like other people have said, when you on a major, ten people get a cut of the money made before you do. sometimes they give you money up front for the producers you want, but that comes out of your profit in the end. plus any videos that they do also comes out of their profit, that's how TLC sold millions of copies and didn't have shit to show for it after it was all over. they were only getting pennies on a cd split 3 ways between the three of them.
independantly is the best way to go if you know what you are doing. you can potentially get alot more with a major, but maybe not, plus you go through all the bullshit that they want you to. you pay for everything up front when you are independant, so you have to have faith that your product is good enough to sell enough to get your getback. but, as opposed to pennies for each cd you sell, you get easily get 10 dollars a cd for your shit, if you sell 10,000, that's $100,000 dollars minus the money you spent to press up that many cd's and advertising and production costs. if you produced it yourself, and had one ad in murderdog or something, you can come out way ahead.
look at what master p did also, had a deal with priority where he got like 73 percent of the money made, and the other 27 percent went to priority, or some number like that. he was selling millions, or at least hundreds of thousands each time no limit dropped something. that's how he is worth over 300 million dollars by himself, plus he made alot of other people rich along the way. Jt the bigga figga had the same deal, but fucked it up.
