That other thread is cool but it's kinda bogged down. Here are some tools and tips I have used for the past coupla years that work flawless.

AntiVir (German made anti-virus that nothing gets by NOTHING)
Virus definitions are constantly updated
http://www.majorgeeks.com/AntiVir_Personal_Edition_d955.html

Outpost Firewall Pro
www.agnitum.com
(Self explanatory...you can get a free version...I mean free trial at the site :) It will give you(OXYMORON ALERT!!)advanced, easy to understand information on all your open ports , the default self configuration settings work fine.

RegCleaner- Get rid of obsolete registry entries from software you uninstalled. It can accumulate and bog down your computer
http://www.worldstart.com/weekly-download/archives/reg-cleaner4.3.htm

Hijackthis- use this if you are having browser problems. You can also identify anything thats scheduled to start up no matter what it is......keyloggers, services, exe files.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3155

Belarc Advisor(Very detailed info about your computer , it's vulnerablities, updates you may or may not have and a whole lotta other shit.
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Index.dat suite(Use this to see some interesting stuff if you thought you covered your tracks. there are files on your pc called index.dat. there is an index.dat file for many of the features on your pc, email , web browser , windows media player.
you cant open them, you cant delete them, shit...you cant even find them ....this can do all of that. This one's a trip A MUST HAVE.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Index.dat_Suite_d4280.html

Eraser(WIPE EVERY THING ...FOR GOOD. Aside from physically destroying your hard drive, this is the best for wiping free space.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=730

BE CAREFUL WITH THIS ONE

If for some strange reason you want to quickly destroy the contents of your entire drive use this. PUT IT ON A FLOPPY OR CD ROM AND CLEARLY LABEL IT. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. Go to your bios settings and set your shit to boot from the A or CD rom drive with the nuke on it. That's it. But if you have the time. I suggest physically taking it apart. If you do take it apart you'll get some sick ass magnets from it.

Dban boot & nuke disk

TIPS:

If you use XP disable the built in firewall. Use the one above. The XP firewall is pretty useless.

Go to Administrative tools/Services and disable Messenger. you don't need it(the majority of you won't, and it has nothing to do with instant messaging.) Disable any service that allows remote administration of your pc , desktop or registry.

All this has worked 100% for me over the past couple of years.

that outpost firewall is coo, but it keeps asking hella shit, and it blocks alot of shit out on websites i go to, like pics on myspace and shit.......
It keeps asking hella shit because that's what it's supposed to do. That means something...usually a program , but it could also be some type of trojan, trying to access the internet or requesting a connection to your computer from a remote location.
About the the stuff not showing up...you just have to adjust your settings. My bad for saying the default settings are cool. By default some ad and images are blocked. Look at this screen shot I just took I purposely checked the boxes you should not have checked. Uncheck them and you should see things fine.

The dialog box that pops up will tell you exactly what is trying to get out. Obvious shit like iexplorer.exe (internet), wmplayer.exe , realplayer.exe (if you are going to be streaming audio and video), aim.exe or whatever chat client you use or any other software you have that relys on a net connection. . allow that out. But when you see shit like " ThisMaybeaVirus.exe" trying to get out to the internet....click DO NOT ALLOW. Do a Google search on the item that's trying to get out to get an explantion of what it is. Don't install software while connected to the internet. For some reason , a lot of software will try to connect to it's company site....who knows what info is being sent. For that same reason, do not try to install cracks or patches for software while connedted to the internet.
