The easier it gets for people to record their own music, the more people you have doing it who lack the skill & experience. The poor quality of a lot of music today is caused by a number of factors though and at the end of the day it's about minimize expense, maximize profit. Unfortunately there's a whole lotta 'good enough' going around in music right now.

As a producer myself I see all of that. People think that if you have Pro Tools your a producer, engineer or whatever. That's far from the truth it takes years to just develop a ear for this shit. That's why a lot of tracks are fucked up, cause you got little Johnny a M-Box and now he's Dr. Dre. Only thing is little Johnny left everything centered with no panning and all the sounds have no space, he doesn't know what a buss is, turning up the volume is his idea of making it sound good, he uses his Dell speakers to monitor, and he's hooked up with all the latest cracked software etc. Just my 2 cents!!!

I think a lot of it has to do with WACK producers, the way they compose their music and the sounds they choose. Like you said, you just don't hear that "SOUL" in the beats anymore. You don't even hear basslines anymore, they just pitch the 808 kick. Fuck that, you need more to fill a track and give it thump. Back then beats utilized REAL instrument sounds; piano, guitar, bass, acoustic drumset percussion sounds, strings, all that good shit that has warmth and covers a huge harmonic spectrum. $hit is all robotic these days and I'm guilty of that myself like 50Cal trys to clown me. I want to hear beats like if their being played live.

^^i was JUST cruisin around listening to some dudes mixtape full of commercial beats and out loud by myself i said "FUCK these 808's man!" lol
haha. True, I can't fucking stand them no more. I personally prefer tighter round kicks, less sustain. A kick from an acoustic drumset is best IMO. And with the right amount of EQing & compression, you can really beef it up and shape it's sound.

maybe cause nobody really notices

thats the sad part about it cause the fans know its something wrong with hiphop music but dont know what it is.i read a review on music and it said that "the average listener might like a song for the first few seconds but then quickly get tired of it because of the poor quality and their brain tells their ears SOMETHING AINT RIGHT and thats what we seeing now in hiphop.alot of songs just come and go.

Does this beat sound THIN?

*Insert link to beat here*

Just playing Sick Wid It.

Personally I have to disagree though, lately I've been hearing really solid production in the rap game, to name a few familiar on the Siccness, Vince V for instance, is incredible, D-Sane is incredible, C-Dubb is amazing he does all of his production himself, and it comes out clean. I think it's the rappers who are falling off.

Then again, if I hear a wack beat I just turn the shit off and forget about it, never listen to it again.

I do however agree with Sick, being "good enough" just isn't good enough. Yet an artist will have 3 people hear his/her shit and say it's GOOD, or build his/her entire rep off My Space comments, and think he's a legitimate artist. And then when someone real comes around, with decent ears, and tells him his shit needs work, he's be all stubborn.

Stubborn, broke, talentless artists. That's the problem.

And yes, you can't polish a turd!

Are you listening to a lot of local shit? If so, the problem is probably that they dont even have or know what a producer is. Wack beatmakers and NO producer and no real engineer will lead to shit not soundin right to anybody but the "artist" who made it.

yea,i listen to a lot of underground music.i know underground music is worst than before because of home studios and fools know how to click "record" and swear they know what the fuck they doin.but artist on major labels get their mastering and mixing done by professionals and even then their beats is just 808,a thin clap and a synth.the vocals sound clean as fuck but the beats are just empty.what songs do yall consider thats a "classic" that has beats like that?

Don't you guys feel like that you are more critical of this stuff just being that your brain/ears are trained into hearing these imperfections, whereas an average listener really couldn't tell the difference ?

Honestly, I've heard these complaints before, just never from anyone besides people who are actually involved in the making of music, in other words your average listener.

Probably because the average listener you are referring to may not be rap fans...well they may like rap,but they probably just listen to whatever is on any play list from radio stations etc and might not have been a rap fan yesterday and may not be one tomorrow. The ones who are complaining might be the ones who have been a rap fan for many years. Sure ones who make music are somewhat critical in their own right but the ones who may not be as vocal about this issue may not understand why things sound as they are...they do not even know what fruity loops and pro-tools are, and they just accept whatever is thrown at them, with out realizing how watered down much music is today and all the corners that are being cut to turn a profit.
